Cody and I have just returned from our fly fishing trip in Cuba. We fished south Cuba at the Jardines De La Reina. Grand Slams, a Bonefish, a Tarpon, and a Permit, were more difficult to achieve than the North Shore, but the Tarpon are more abundant, even though they are slightly smaller, 40 lb. range as opposed to the less abundant but larger North Shore where they are 50-60 lb. range.

Our trip was 16 months in the planning, because the December 2014 easing of restrictions had yet to occur. We went on a People-to-People Visa, and interestingly, only one in our travel party of four had his passport stamped both upon entering and exiting Cuba. The airport is a nightmare; the people are very friendly; the cuisine is excellent, and the fly fishing is outstanding.

I have made three posts to our blog, so far, but with the restrictions easing, it is a destination that would be worth considering.

It is definitely a destination on my list.

Who was your outfitter?

What flys worked best?

Any other tips to the traveler to Cuba?

Details appreciated.

Meadowlark,

We used Tailwaters to book the trip through Avalon and decided on the South Shore trip, Jardines De La Reina.

Bonefish, light tan Gotchas in size 2s and 4s, It needs to be something that will sink quickly, Cuban Bonefishing.
Permit, a light colored fly called the Avalon Fly. I have not written my post about the Permit fishing but I will include a picture of the Avalon Fly when I do.
Tarpon, on the flats, we used 10# rods, sometimes we used a floating line, sometimes a clear, intermediate sink tip line--depended upon tidal patterns and whether we were fishing an incoming or outgoing tide--purple and black Tarpon Bunny, purple and pink Tarpon Toad, but not the foam head ones, and for the deep holes, we fished a 12# 500 grain sinking line using a Black Death and a fly whose name I do not know but was bought and used for Golden Dorado. I'll have to update the blog post and include a picture, Tarpon in Cuba.

I'll include more as we break down our trip and review our notes of what worked and what didn't.

Yep, tan gotchas work all over the Caribbean so not surprised they would also work in Cuba...and the black death is probably my favorite tarpon fly across the Caribbean.

Thanks...and I would love to see the "Avalon fly". Thanks for those and any other details.
