Hdi is the the traditional sonar and dsi in one unit. Which you don't need on a float tube, a dsi unit will work just fine. Look at the float tube fanatics website I used their set up

A DSI unit is just Down Scan and that unit should have never been produced--marketing ignorance and why it is no longer made.
A regular sonar unit (2D) is a lot better.
The dual technology HDI version is a LOT better.

I think for float tubing since you won't go far and your just looking for structure you will be fine with a dsi without having to break the bank. The HDI units don't come with the tranducer you need to do dsi and sonar you have to buy it separate. It will only come with the sonar transducer. If you think you will upgrade to maybe a bass raider or something or go to deeper water I would go with the hdi. I have the hdi and love it of course I'm always wanting to upgrade but I'm happy with it.

The current Elite 3X is 2D sonar only. $99.99 in the 2015 Bass Pro catalog.

I use an Eagle monochrome fish finder that is mounted to my PVC pipe rod holder. It is powered with a sealed 12V rechargeable battery in a water proof box.
