White Rock lake has a motor size limit (2.5 or 3 hp max) except for emergency boats (dallas fire dept's boats). The lake is mainly sailboats with several kayaks. Seems like no one can really find the crappie in good numbers on the main lake; however, the crappie will run white Rock Creek in large numbers and can easily be caught from the banks. The crappie are really good quality. Nice and thick. Big shoulders. Carey thorn does guide trips for wrc and can show you how to locate fish away from the huge crowds. Then just go on your own with what you've learned. I don't work for Carey or anything. I've fished with him several times and can vouch for him.

Wait until the run and hit the creek instead of trying the main lake.

The colder the better,
Get a away from the crowd and park at Merriman park walk across the road (Skillman)and when you see the schools of shad start fishing.
Very easy to find and get them.

Second frost we start down there. Water main lake needs to be about 50-55 degrees and the shad start moving into the creek systems and the crappie and other game fish follow. Last 2 years there have been a bust. The fish have not moved up in good numbers. Why, I don't know.

Maybe:

1: no other lakes or creeks had water to fish except Wrc. Got fished out with all the crappie junkies that are normally at other creeks and lakes.

2: thread fin population has not made a huge push, just gizzard shad are pushing up Wrc. Crappie eat threadfins more than gizzards.

3: construction under the northwest highway might be to shallow now for the crappie to come thru in numbers. Used to be 7 ft there. Now it's like 2-3 ft for 30 yards.

4: poaching can't be helping. Especially last year. Peeps keeping 5-9 inch fish.

And: usually when all the threads show up where it looks like u can walk across the creek on them, I will leave and move creeks. Way to much bait to limit usually. Billions of native bait and one jig, crappie can't see the jig thru all the bait. Lol. Still catch the crappie in that bio mass of bait, but harder.

There are a few very good crappie in the main body of White Rock Lake year round, but you have to look hard until you define the patterns. I fish my kayak there regularly, but release all my catch there now because of the recent decline.

For the record the outboard motor limit on the lake is 10.5 HP. You can launch any boat with a bigger motor and just navigate with your trolling motor. https://tpwd.texas.gov/fishboat/fish/recreational/lakes/white_rock/access.phtml

Commercialized, wholesale bait consumption has greatly reduced the shad population. On numerous occasions, I have seen multiple five gallon buckets filled with shad collected in the shallows during the winter to be frozen for catfishing. There are even guided "bait trips" done commercially in the fall/winter now. Combine that with the numerous brushes with low oxygen during the recent years droughts and the shad (and therefore crappie) population has been really stressed.

I would think fewer shad would make fishing better in the short run no?

Nothing much else for them to eat but your bait?

Last time I fished WR, about 18 months ago, we could have walked across the lake on the backs of baby shad. They were everywhere.

We did not have a bite.
