I don't know what's been going on but I'm losing fish left and right , sometimes around 5 a day. I have mostly been losing the fish on rattle traps with both a m/h or m rod. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas of what's going on. Side note I'm not using the same traps every time.I've been feeling like I have a 50/50 chance of landing fish lately and I don't like it! Any help would be great.

Stock RT hooks are junk. Replace with quality, SHARP hooks. Keep slack out of your line while fighting the fish.

Lean on the fish rather than jerk set.....reel down until your pole is bowed and then "lean" back...since your bait is already moving, that action alone will bury the hooks for you

As Champion1 says, loosen your drag. On ALL CBs, I loosen my drag so that a 3 lb bass can pull just a little drag. Works with all CBs and you can always tighten it if a big fish hits. Hope this helps.

Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

Keep continiuous pressure on him. Keep the rod tip low and crank on him. If he is wanting to jump put the rod tip in the water and crank faster, when he jumps don't stop reeling and look... keep reeling. Don't stop.. Keep pressure on. I don't loose many on traps. Use KVD #2 hooks on 1/2 oz and #1's on 3/4 oz. If you get a big one by the boat that still wants to act up and lunge down, I push the thumb bar and put my thumb on the spool until he settles down then I engage the reel and get him in;)

I don't loosen the Drag on traps. I am usually ripping them free of grass and loose Drag defeats the purpose. I do loosen the drag on diving crankbaits.

Are you sure it's bass and not gar? I was getting bit like crazy the other day and couldn't get a hook in. After a few minutes I figured out it was the gar. Those needlenose are really hard to hook but they can feel like a freight train when the hit.

I've noticed as well that the stock hooks don't stay sharp very long. I went through a period myself where I was losing a lot of fish after 3-4 seconds of fighting. I haven't replaced my hooks, but I keep a sharpener on board my boat and when the hooks are no longer tacky on my fingertip I get to sharpening.

When I did that after the aforementioned period of heartbreak, my loss ratio dropped considerably.

What kind of line are you using?

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm changing hooks as we speak , and I will try these suggestions. I'm positive they're bass , most of the time they are throwing the trap when they jump out of the water. I literally almost lost an eye due to a flying trap. How ironic , I throw a trap , catch the fish , the said fish then procedes to throw the trap back and almost catches me! I appreciate everyone's help

One more comment about keeping slack out of your line. It's not just while fighting the fish to the boat. You should be keeping your rod tip low as the fish comes to the side of the boat, always countering the fishes movement with your rod. If they get a chance to jump on a slack line, there's a good chance they will shake the Trap, even with sharp hooks.
