This morning we were fishing in a lake (from a boat) over hydrilla, out In Lorentz of reeds along a bank. Big bream kept attacking my buddy's plastic worm while he was bass fishing. I was fishing for bream with artificial baits, but couldn't get down on the bottom where these bream were located. That is, I had to work my Beedle Spin, flies on a float rig, etc. up above the hydrilla or I would hang up. I did manage to catch eleven up in the water column, but it was painful to see his line jumping with no way for me to get down there to them. Any suggestions for next time?

Use a heavier bait or bait!

Banker, I can use a heavy enough jig to get down in the hydrilla, but it hangs up. My buddy is using a Texas rigged worm to come through it, but I can't Texas rig these little jigs and Beedle spins I'm using. I don't know of any bait I can use that won't hang up in hydrilla.

I fish with a Briminator over grass quite often. It rides hook up and sinks as slow as you want, depending on weight. I have found fishing deep, in general, with a fly rod is tough. Lately, I've been having good luck with a yellow betts fancy popper over grass beds; also pistol petes. You might try those as well.

Thanks for the reply Banker and J-Moe. This may be one of those problems without a solution. J-Moe, I'll look at the bates you suggested. Actually,, the things I'm using work pretty well in the upper water column.

When I go next week I plan to use the tried and true night crawlers. Will have to fish them on a float rig since I'll still be fishing over hydrilla.

Banker, maybe you know how to fish a bottom rig along a bottom covered with hydrilla. If so, please talk to me.

I don't know if they make them or not but if you are going to use worms then try finding some small weedless hooks. Or try making some on your own. You will probably still get caught up in some hydrilla but it shouldn't be as often.

Banker, maybe you know how to fish a bottom rig along a bottom covered with hydrilla. If so, please talk to me. Areas that have a lot of Hydrilla or grass beds can be very difficult to fish especially if the fish are laying on the bottom. I usually use a heavier weight (shot) and usually fish the edges of the grass/hydrilla beds. If the fish are not holding at the edges it can be difficult. You can also try using a slip float and fish the holes in the beds. You have a good chance on loosing some fish if they get into the hydrilla or the grass beds after hooked. I have lost some good ones.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. One thing that makes it a little harder is that I'm on the back seat of my buddy's boat and since he is fishing for bass I can't move out to fish the edges, and in positions which might best for getting my bait on bottom. I have a boatload of fun anyway, and will just use a float rig, or moving rig (panfish crank baits and spinners), or flies, and not worry too much about those fish I can't get to on bottom under the grass.
We fished from daylight until noon yesterday and I only caught eleven, which is slow for sunnies this time of year, but I brough them home, filleted them, and there will be more than enough for our supper tonight. As Banker always says, it does not get any better.

Ftid, get you some Charlie Brewer's Crappie Slider jigs. You can get them up to 1/8th oz and rig plastics weedless and worms and nightcrawlers semi-weedless. That should do the trick.
