Randle Hall's clients hold the last six blue catfish records of Lake Lewisville including the current record of 63# caught back in 2000. Chad Furguson and Randal Hall were interviewed by Tpwd Magazine in a 2005 article and Chad posts it on his North Texas Catfish Guide Service website. I'm pretty sure many of you know these two guides.... Big Blues - Big Bleu Catfish by Paul Canada TPWD Magazine 2005 According to Ferguson and Hall the key to finding trophy blue catfish (25lb+) is to focus on bait fish, threadfin shad... The baitfish is the key, explains Hall. You have got to take a look at the entire ecosystem. The plankton determines where the shad will be, and the shad determine where the big blues are going to be found. ...

Blues, this quote from TPWD biologist on blue catfish growth, is for you.
Any cold-blooded animal has what we biologists term as indeterminate growth, says Hysmith. They will continue to grow on and on, unless one of three things food source, senility or environmental conditions limit or control that growth. Under the right conditions, these blue catfish will grow to tremendous sizes.
In plain English, it's not genetics that determines catfish growth, here's how those things are broken down FOOD SOURCE - lots of bait fish, blues will get fat and grow, no bait fish no problem for blues they just eat any small fish including game fish and catfish. Of course other games fish are not as easy as shad, blue catfish growth rates will be retarded.
SENILITY - High pressured fishing stressed fish, over prolonged period of time these fish go crazy and die. SO YOU'RE ALSO KILLING FISH EVEN IF YOU CPR. There are other human activities that stress fish. .. competition within species, intra-specific, and with other species, inter-specific, also added stress...
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS - silt and chemical that washed into rivers and creeks find their ways into lakes, robbed lake water oxygen level which can affect entire food chain. Catfish are hardy and fair well even in poor water conditions but bait fish won't do well in polluted water. Back to food source factor.

That record has been broken a few times but clients choose not to mess with the records. Also they don't even fish the lake any longer. If anybody was to be considered as king of catfish on Lewisville, it would be Bobby Kubin!!

I am sure all the gentlemen mentioned above are great guys. I will say that I enjoyed my trip with Tom very much. I think it would be hard to crown a king without fishing with every guide.

Not a Lewisville, cat but truly a 64 lb Blue from Texoma, Taken on Danny King orig. CPR. I agree, that Tom maybe the best, although I have never fished with Tom, but as you said, you have to Work to be the best, and I see the truck/Boat there many days..

Thanks for dedicating a quote just for me... But you can't honestly believe that "ANY" cold blooded animal will continue to grow if it's given enough food and the right environment.
Why is so much money spent to cross florida genetics in large mouth? On that logic crappie would weigh 9lbs. There have been fish sampled from texoma that over are 20 yrs old and only 18" long. Others were 15 yrs old and over 40lbs. So you are telling me one fish found food it's whole life and the other one didn't? I will agree with you that it takes more than just good genetics, food and environment play a huge part.
The soap box I'm on about stocking has nothing to do with any of the lakes you could think of, I promise...... I'm a long ways from Dallas.
I know you are freaking out about the new regulation that are coming for twok. Hopefully they will work great, and not have the negative affect on the hybrids you are thinking it will. I'm not convinced any of us will live long enough to see a huge impact on either fishery from new slot limits on blues.
At the end of the day things are changing. Tpwd is starting to take notice of all the squeaky wheels wanting to improve/maintain Texas catfishing. I think it's about time and could have been too little too late.

Wonder why Kubin no longer posts here? Always enjoyed his photos. Wish I had booked a trip with Tom before I moved to Alabama.
He is truly a sick individual.

If anybody was to be considered as king of catfish on Lewisville, it would be Bobby Kubin!! "they"? Only Randle Hall has the reign on Lake Lewisville, six consecutive lake records,... Getting one or two lake records is big deal, but six consecutive lake records, that's hard to duplicate. True that Hall doesn't guide LL anymore but his clients lake records still rule supreme. Hall didn't get national recognition for catching big catfish for nothing.
Why do I go fishing? To catch a box of fish and/or some quality time under the sun. Thank Heaven I never fail fishing in Texas, catching box fish or plenty of sunburn.

Blues, there were a few catfish studies on Lake Kentucky, they found that catfish growth rates are slowest parts of the lake where inter-specific and or intra-specific competition amongst fish in different areas of the lake. The areas with the highest growth rates were in areas with high harvest rates that reduced competition for food and foraging structures and fish habitats, etc.
From the bank I see these fish competition in play all the time. Small fish such as yellow and white bass may be biting for minutes or hours but they disappeared when blue catfish came in... then catfish would disappeared, now either white or yellow bass, or hybrids,... big fish tend to scare away small fish. Big blue catfish are like the ugly outlaws of old west, as soon as they appear all fish just disappeared, only large hybrids 7 lb or bigger would dare to forage near big blue catfish... there are winners and looser among catfish.

I haven't even heard of Randall Hall. I would agree with Tom about Bobby, but Bobby is currently not guiding so I got to go with Tom.

Tom Gravely is 'da Man. Bobby doesn't guide anymore, and Ferguson and Hall don't guide on Lewisville so if we're going to debate who is the best guide on a lake I'd suggest we talk about guides that ACTUALLY GUIDE ON THE LAKE. Tom's only problem is he's too modest. Just sayin'
