its always good to get as big as you can, they are more durable that way

I went with the RAM-111 which is the 1.5" ball with a round base. Seems solid enough for an HDS7. Pleased with the purchase.

This, it also works okay for the 8, looks a little on the heavy side, but still solid!

Then when you upgrade to a 9 or 12 you'll be able to just switch out gimbals instead of re-drill holes. That's what I did with my 998 when I upgraded to the 1199. I had the 2.25" and all I had to do was switch the mounts.
