...what will bite when out crappie fishing at night with minnows.

We were on Lake Bonham Friday night catching one dink after another. Pole twitched and I gave it the normal light hook set. In an instant the rod and reel was in the water...jerked out of my hand. I went over the rail to get it and was barely able to grab it with my finger tips while my buddy was keeping my other half in the boat. The fish jerked again and off it went. Had some excitement for a couple of seconds and lost the rod and reel. Wonder what that was?

Then my buddies rods started jumping. We had crappie lights off each front corner and we both had two rods each. He started to reel his in and it was tangled all around his other line and his light cord. Then my other rod was going off. I reeled it up and found line all tangled around it and my crappie light. We had a complete mess on our hands and it still hadn't hit us that the fish that pulled my rod out of my hand was doing all this tangling up! We have all lines and crappie lights reeled in and are working on the tangled mess when I noticed a line was looped over one of my rod holders. I grabbed the line and could feel the fish on the other end! We had to free this line from the tangled mess all while trying to keep whatever fish this was on the hook. I thought all along it was a big catfish. It felt huge. Finally I managed to get it up near the surface and it came up real quick and splashed and went back down. We still thought it was a big catfish. My buddy had his hands full with the tangled mess so I hollered to my other buddy to get the D_MN net and a flashlight! After a few more minutes I was able to pull the fish back to the surface and my buddy was able to net it. When he lifted the fish into the boat the little crappie hook popped out.

I wanted to get this beast back into the water so we took a couple of pictures and back into the water she went. I'm estimating her between 8.5 and 9 lbs.

Then it hit me my pole was on the bottom and maybe I could pull the line and get my rod and reel back. As I pulled on the line I could feel the line unspooling from the reel. This is why we had such a mess. Somehow in all the commotion the bail on the reel got flipped and she had a free for all getting us nice and all tangled up. When I got to the end of the line it just came off the reel. I always tie a good knot onto the reel when re-spooling and have no idea how it came loose but it did. So my rod and reel are still on the bottom of Lake Bonham.

You just never know what will bite that minnow, especially at night. It was a miracle we were able to land this fish on 6lb test by hand through all the tangles but we did. It added a lot of excitement to the night and was a great adventure.

If anyone knows why my pics are sideways and how to fix it please PM me. All the pics I have posted so far on TFF are sideways but they are not on my pc. Thanks.

Nice fish and story. Did you catch any keeper crappie? Been wanting to try Bonham for awhile. Might load up and head out there early Friday morning.

I see some of those big largemouth sometimes at Possum Kingdom coming to the green fishing lights. I've hooked them before but normally they pull out of the little number 8 hooks I use with the Ghost minnows.

Nice Catch by the way.

John 21:3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee.

We probably caught 30 crappie and only 4 were keepers. The last several time I've fished for crappie on Lake Bonham the keepers have been hard to come by. Coffee Mill and Crocket are both much better crappie lakes and not too much further north. No lights on their boat ramp though.

If I ever make it a year without losing a pole overboard or breaking one I might just toss one in for good luck. I've lost poles every year but this is my first with the Bee Readys so I might be good now!! Congrats on the pig. Sorry about the rod n reel!!

I have done my share of night fishing years back and can say I felt all the tension & excitement in that story. Great read, Thanks.
