So I buy 96 zx 180 a year ago. Spent more money restoring it. I've got more in than it's worth now. I go to the lake trolling motor broke so come home and plug in the battery charger and notice transom wood and stringer wood is rotten. So do I spend more money to fix, sell it for huge loss or unload box of 12 gauge shells into it.Oh and the wife is still mad about just buying it.

I have the exact same boat and yes I also have to replace the unecapsulated wood because of rot. I bought mine new and it lasted alomst 20 yrs living outside for 10 yrs. I got it estimated from classic fiberglass can't remember who I spoke too. He told me look at how long it lasted now just think how long it will last when I do it right. For me it's a whole lot less expensive to fix mine than buy another. In another 20 yrs I'll be 75 should be long enough for me. I do not have transom issues yet if I do I believe I would do sea cast not wood like Hop did. I hope this helps you.

Boats and Murphy's law is synonymous isn't it? My battery and fuel deck has some rotten spots, but you have to remove the whole top of the boat to remove the fuel tank just to get to the cheap 1/2" plywood deck. All because one of the live well pumps leaks which you cannot get to without removing the whole top of the boat. I just put in a battery rack made of ash, don't use the left livewell, keep the boat in storage with the hatches open.
I think the initial full cost of a boat is like a down payment. Should buy a $4000 annual payout annuity to cover maintence and repairs when you buy a boat.

Check out Seacast if done right it will last forever and be a good bit cheaper than laminated plywood. Can be done yourself but it's not exactly fun lol. Got a 225 Optimax (5-600 pounds IIRC) on a 10" plate hanging off a Seacast transom with zero issues.

seacast for sure, did mine 3 yrs ago and solid as a rock now, champion 184 with a worked over 175 fast strike (220 hp). not all that hard but you do have to be somewhat careful when cleaning the transom so you don't hole the hull. the short version of my repair, 3 days total but I had a shop and experience with glass work, figure a week at least if you do it.

Transom club members never forget lol. I used a big ol ship auger and a chainsaw to get most of it out, went quick then as Hop mentioned lots of scraping and careful drilling to get the last bits out. Not too bad all in all think I had $700 total including tools and materials and I needed two of the big kits to fill it.

Hey hopalong, do you remember how thick the gelcoat was on the outside of your transom? Also what year is your Champion?
