I'm considering selling my boat. Where is the best place to get a fair value?

I would suggest boat trader.com. Find other similar boat models/years and price yours according to condition.

Keep in mind that selling a boat is a seasonal thing. I used Bass Boat Central along with boat trader.com. This allowed me to compare hundreds of boats (nationwide) with mine and the electronics and accessories I had on it. A very well maintained boat with newer electronics will attract people from other states. Had a guy come from New Orleans with cash to purchase mine? Keep in mind that a used boat is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it...so you have to really make it sellable.

I always use NADA, mainly because when I bought mine, that's what my insurance used to determine the value. It's simply a starting point without any add ons, etc., and does not take into consideration the market in your area.

I agree with Gmann. NADA is fair, although it does not take into consideration things like trolling motors. I have bought and sold 4 boats using it and never had a problem as a buyer or a seller. Some people feel that their boat is worth more and that is certainly there right, but selling used boats that you created memories in can be hard to do. NADA is a good gauge and helps in the discussion. All the replies above are spot on. Insurance companies depreciate things like trolling motors pretty fairly. I would say maybe 5-10% depreciation for the first three years total, then 10% every year after. I am not sure how much your boat is worth but a good rule of thumb in my opinion is expect to give a lake test if you are selling anything over the 6-7k mark. It is a lot easier to get asking price when you are up front and transparent and nothing is more transparent than a lake test and an honest conversation. There is a fine line between giving it away and asking too much, you will usually find out what that window is by the volume of interest

And if you want to sell it, please be realistic. It's very, very rare that a boat is as clean as the highest level of NADA and please don't list out each complement of your boat with it's NADA value. It just proves you don't really want to sell your boat. You want someone to give you a ridiculous amount and you must think it has a gold brick hidden in it somewhere. Be honest and realistic and it will sell much faster. Don't be an NADA clown.

NADA is great if you are a buyer, but lousy if you are a seller. When my boat burned up in a boat shed fire, the insurance tried to use NADA as the payoff price. Not happening. They ended up giving me almost twice what their NADA estimate was. In my case there was a huge difference between a Ranger 373V and a Ranger 373V Bassmaster Classic in excellent condition....Use NADA if you are buying, but not if you are selling.

Thanks for the information. I never had to actually buy a boat, both of mine were given to me by family members (with stipulation I had to repair major issues) and never knew about NAPA.

It's nearly time to get #3.
