This is what I know as a golden shiner. I don't think that they are the same as normal store bought "minnows"??

Bass minnows are usually just big crappie minnows, almost everything you get from the bait shop are golden shiners. However, I would suggest specifically ordering fathead minnows by the pound of you want to stock a pond, usually run between $8-10 per pound.

Yes, I know for fact that store bought minnows grow to be very large in stock tanks ..... know where one is that got minnows dumped in it 20 years ago.
I don't know if they are Golden Shiners tho!

I think most crappie minnows are blackheads (aka fathead minnows). Don't think they are the same as golden shiners.
There is also the Rosie Red variety.

When you buy bait from a store you are buying golden shiners. Fathead minnows only get to be about 2.5 inches long sometimes 3 and are used for stock tanks as they are prolific breeders and stay relatively small so they have a smaller chance of over populating a pond. Rosie reds are a type of fathead minnow. Fatheads come in two varieties black and pink. The bass minnows you are talking about are just large shiners and crappie minnows are younger smaller shiners. Only the larger older fish will show the golden hue that gives the fish their name and they typically are 3-5 inches long. It also takes them longer to reach sexual maturity up to a year but some times as much as 3 years. Which is why the Fathead minnows are better for stock tanks because they reach sexual maturity at around 90 days and seldom live longer than a year. Which means they usually die after their first spawn.
