Hey guys I caught a 9lber the other day and said I would not get a mount until I caught one over 10lbs but it was such a awesome looking fish now I think I would like a mount. I only have 4 pics of it and no measurements. Do you know of anyone that could do a good job with that?

If you talk to the taxidermist, you will hear yes. However, even with measurements, my experience has been there is not a guarantee your fish will "look" exactly like the one you caught. Out of the 3 replicas I have had made, only one is a true artistic representation of the fish I caught. One of my other replicas is pretty good, but the last one looks like they grabbed it blindly out of a box labeled 10 lbs. The disappointing replica is finished nicely, but looks nothing like my fish. I'd be happy to share my experiences through PM if you are interested.

This is what I have seen as well. I have two done and both are quality artwork, but not great representations of the actual fish caught. They still look good and bring back good memories, which I guess is the main purpose, but you might have a hard time if you are trying to get someone to capture all the intricacies of the fish you caught.

Why is it that every time someone posts a link to a taxidermy site they recommend and say "they are the best" or "they make the most realistic" or "they've done it a long time"......all the replicas in the pics look like casper the ghost? Seriously, I look at some of the replicas and there is not a bass in existence except maybe an albino that has that much white in it naturally or has that sort of uniformity in the spots and coloration. I see several people recommend another place frequently, and every replica they do looks EXACTLY the same. Not every fish was caught from that body of water and was an inbred cousin.

If this is the attitude by those that provide this service, then no one should have to wait for a replica to get done. You should be able to call in with measurements and they just grab one off the shelf.

I only personally know of two people that got replicas. The measurements were off and the fish looked nothing like the pictures they submitted.

They were beautifully painted, but if size, shape, and color are off, what exactly is it a replica of?

You aren't asking for an "fiberglass bass", you are asking for a "replica", which in my opinion means as close to the real thing as possible without killing the fish.

I've now had 3 replicas done. The first of which was done from a picture and weight only. I had to kind of guess the length based on the length of one of my knuckles. Once I had that measurement I printed out a large copy of the picture and used that to approximate the length of the fish which was a VERY LONG 8.51# SKINNY fish. Here's a pic. For reference I am 6'6". The estimate I came up with was 27.5-28" long and based on what I saw on how skinny she was, that was definitely very close.

Now to the replica part. I used a very reputable taxidermist on here and thought the product I got back was a great looking piece of art. However, it looked very little like my fish. In fact this replica fish looked 11-12# because of the length of the form that was used since my fish was so long and it had a nice big belly on it. Does that mount look awesome on my fireplace? Absolutely, but again it wasn't a replica of what I had caught and I only really realized it when I got the next one.

It was for a 9.93# fish I caught in a tourney on Fork that we won. It was my first tourney win so I wanted another replica even though I said it needed to be a DD before I would do another one. When I got it back (from the same company) it looked good even though it needed a little more attention to detail IMO...this one looked much more like the fish I had caught than the previous one, which actually became the problem. I now had a mount of a 24.5" 9.93# fish that looked significantly smaller than my 8.51# fish.

Then I finally caught that elusive DD last year, again on Fork. I used a different company for that one and it was spectacular. If you want some details on that company or my advice on how to get a close measurement of your fish from the pictures you have, send me a PM. I don't like starting company wars on here. Both companies I worked with were awesome people, one just did a better job for me on that one fish.

Ron Kelly actually let me go through his shop with him and pick which mold he used, so I got to find one that really matched the size/shape of my dad's fish and then his paint job was quite good as well. Took a while to get it, but he was very affordable and did a great job.
