I usually use white bread or hamburger buns to bait my traps. Was thinking that some type dog food, etc, might be easier. Any suggestions? Thanks

The topic of perch traps seems to get asked alot. Here's the relevant info from Texas fishing regs.

https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdo...evices-for-fish

Perch Traps

For use in SALT WATER only.

May be used to take NONGAME fish only.
May not exceed 18 cubic feet.
Must be marked with a floating visible orange buoy not less than 6 inches in height and 6 inches in width. The buoy must have a gear tag valid only for 10 days attached.
Must be equipped with a degradable panel as described for crab traps.
Buoys or floats may not be made of plastic bottle(s) of any color or size.
It is unlawful to place any type of trap within the area in Cedar Bayou between a department sign erected where Mesquite Bay flows into Cedar Bayou and the department sign erected near the point where the pass empties into the Gulf of Mexico

Now if you were to ask me about baiting a minnow trap, I'd suggest that you get a prescription pill bottle, drill a bunch of holes into it, pack it with canned cat food or dog food and click the lid. Stick that in a minnow trap and you'll be good to go.

I use range cubes and they work great! Throw it in the creek and come back the next day and it's full.

Corn on the cob works too. Tie it to the inside of the trap or it will disappear.

Do you guys set your trap on bottom or suspend it? Also what types of areas do you look for to set your trap in?

mreeed: i'm no expert, but i enjoy trapping bait. i refuse to pay for it even though i've spent enough on cast nets and minnow/perch traps that it's probably cheaper to buy it.

i usually set mine on the bottom. it does seem like it catches better in water that is about 4-5 feet deep. it probably depends upon the structure in the area that you're trapping. if i throw my cast net over the plants that are growing near my dock there are usually perch there. if i cast the net where there are no plants i rarely catch any perch. so i would set them in an area where there is something that they would normally like to hide around.

anybody tried a bagel for bait. i was thinking about using that since they are a little tougher than white bread. i thought it might stay together longer.
