I posted this question a few days ago, and really what I got was how people use leaders. I totally understand the concept about sensitivity and all. What I'm looking for is this. When you tie a smaller weight flouro/mono leader to a higher weight braid, aren't you now fishing with the smaller weight line. It doesn't matter what weight braid you have if you tie a smaller weight leader. Correct, or am I missing something here. Weakest link?

Yes you are correct any mono or flouro will not hold up to braid witch in turn means you are relying on your mono or flouro to hold up to your braid witch will be the weakest link to your set up. Your talking 50-65lb braid to 15-20lb flouro but in return I believe 20-25lb flouro is stronger then 30lb braid.

The main advantages that I see. Over time, if you store the spools correctly, you save money. You end up just replacing leaders. If you tie a knot that passes well through guides (Alberto, FG knot) you can use very long leaders. You obtain qualities and hook set quality that you can't from using a single line. For example, with jerk baits that suspend best on mono, using a braid mainline to a long mono leader results in good suspension, but with higher sensitivity and easier hook sets on long casts

Just throw the lightest line you can get by with and something you have confidence in. Very simple.

I use braid main/fluoro leader on my spinning reels mostly because of braid's low memory. It also has decent castability and allows for more positive hooksets on spinning gear. Fluoro leader gives it a more stealthy presentation and if you have to break off, it will break at the leader rather than having to cut the braided line free.

What size braid do you guys use for backing on spinning setups? I use 10 lb. test braid / 8 lb. fluoro leader on my bass spinning rods. I think that's a pretty typical setup.

I never considered braid filler and just a fluoro / mono leader for anything other than drop shot. I gotta give this a try. Eventually that fluoro gets expensive when you keep changing baits and cutting line.
