Yesterday my daughter and I fished lower Dunlap. We launched at Schumans Beach, thank you Mr. Banker, which was no problem at all. Fishing from there down to the dam and up to about the deep hole was possible, though not ideal. Meaning the current was very swift making it difficult to hold on a good spot. Upriver past the deep hole was an exercise in futility. The river gets narrower and the current swifter. After a few minutes of fighting the current and crashing on the drift into docks, we headed back downriver. We set a personal record for number of sunnies caught, or NOT caught, a whopping total of nine, in FOUR HOURS. And, they were very cold to the touch, but then they are living in water from the bottom of Canyon Lake. Not many fish caught, but still a very nice day on the water.

Thanks for the report Joe Ed. Yes Sir your right. Swift currents and cold water. I am surprised that any of em are biting. For what I have been hearing it will be sometime in July before they stop letting out water on Canyon Lake. It is going to be a very difficult bite on the Guadalupe River this summer.

My pleasure J-Moe. Mr. Banker, you hear right. 17 more days at the present rate of 9 inches drop per day. That means the 909 level will be reached July 4th. The release rate is dropping at a snails pace. But, I suppose it's possible they might accelerate the decrease rate lessening the current downstream, but possibly prolonging the faster than normal current. I don't now the factors that determine the release rate, but I personally would rather they keep it high and get everything back to normal as soon as possible. I miss being able to be on Dunlap at 35 in just 5 minutes from my house. Thanks for the replies.

Mcqueeney has been muddy all month long. Current is fast. Fishing has not been that good on that lake as well. Hopefully things settle down next month.

Until the GBRA stops letting out water on Canyon Lake the bite will slow down for the sunnies. Hopefully it gets better in July.




Side Note: From what I have been hearing the ramps are very busy on Canyon.

I think the rice farmers down stream have some of that water on lease, at least conditionally. I believe that's the cause of the release.

GBRA controls the release only when Canyon is at conservation level and below, ie 909 ft. Over that the Corp of Engineers controls the release. They say their goal is to get the lake back as quickly as possible to 100% flood storage capability, which would be at the 909 "normal" level. They release as much as possible to expedite reaching 909, so long as it does not cause flooding downstream. At the present rate of release, it looks like 909 will be reached in 9 days, barring more rain and they keep the release at the present 4744 cfs.

I have a quick question, I have fished Dunlap only for about a year now and I'm still learning the river. But where is the deep hole located?

If you launch at Schumans, head North upriver. After passing Clearsprings on your right, look for RV park, the river makes a sharp turn to the west. You will pass a shallow area on your right marked with bouys. On your right, just before the river really narrows, look for a blue house out on a point. The deep hole is right in front of it. Hope this helps.

Mr. Banker, hopefully I'll be back around the deep hole soon. It looks like Canyon will be at conservation level July 1. I'll be on that lake and Dunlap shortly thereafter. I say this as I'm assuming the release by then will be back to recreational level. Here's hoping.
