 LSC: Anatomy of a Flood

 A year ago today, my son and I, along with two friends were paddling down a remote stretch of the lower Pecos River when we were hit a flash flood, caused by 11 inches of rain falling on us overnight. Since then, I've done a fair bit of research on that flood, as you might imagine, in an attempt to dissect it and learn how to avoid them in the future since we are now, and probably will always be river paddlers. As a result of that research, I posted this story about the events leading up to the flood and the results, including the story behind the photo above. I remember reading about you guys ordeal last summer, it was really amazing to read, glad yall all made it out ok. I can't imagine what that would feel like. . .

Pretty good read, gotta say even if it appears to be the "500 year flood" just looking at the higher canyon walls and how they appear to have been scraped by moving water, it seems that river has seen higher flooding than what you witnessed?

Pretty good read, gotta say even if it appears to be the "500 year flood" just looking at the higher canyon walls and how they appear to have been scraped by moving water, it seems that river has seen higher flooding than what you witnessed? That river has been around for hundreds of thousands of years, so yes it's seen higher water. A flood in 1954, caused by Hurricane Alice, supposedly caused 100-foot rise on the Pecos and killed a couple of fisherman on the river. I think the area flooding killed 11 people in Ozona when the remnants of the hurricane brought 20 inches of rainfall in 24 hours...and hydrologist list it as 2,000 year flood.

Love that part of Texas , Fished the Pecos in New Mexico long time ago, amazing how many times in books and just talking with west Texans , how often the Pecos comes up.

The steep canyon walls do not let the water "spread out". It is like being in a funnel and water is dumped on top of you. My camp is less than a mile from the high bridge. I have run the river in a bass boat when I can get past the (silted in) mouth of the Rio Grande many times.
