I am new to the bass boat owning community as I recently bought my first, a 1989 Ranger 361V w/1989 Mercury 150HP XR4 Black Max. I have had the boat out twice and my son and I are really enjoying it so far.

I am looking for suggestions for a prop. My local service company did not recognize my current prop and suggested a 'better' one. I do have a little trouble getting on plane and it pulls right once there. I am checking plugs and compression this week but want to address the prop thing as well. I am not concerned with top end, mostly quick plane and keeping on plane or the nose lower at slower speeds.

Any thoughts for this particular motor/boat?

Thanks,
Robert

if your rig is still "orginal" from day one tha set up may have something "left on tha table" from factory and/or dealership... first thing ta check is tha gear case. if its orginal XR4 its gonna be whats referred to by some as a "little" case... it will be about 4 1/4" across tha exhaust/prop shaft opening... this kinda limits what props will run on it.. it also is a "high geared" case having 1.78 ta 1 gears which will make a difference in tha pitch ya might end up with.....

best suggestion I can come up with would be ta give Steve a call... can probably put ya on something real quick.. look over his website below..

Have run into this boat and motor combination before. You need to see if the skeg is not bent and the trim tab is set a little to the right. Best prop we found for this boat was a 19pitch small hub High Five prop. Like TLW its a 4 & 1/4 gear case.

Actually, I stopped at the aforementioned local guy to pick up a torque/trim tab because it only had a flat anode bolted in. He asked me to bring the boat by so he could check out some other factors and said it appeared to all be straight and even and such. I am not sure if he paid attention to the skeg specifically or not but I thought I noticed later it could be bent to the right so I will have to check that again. I did end up grabbing a tab and tried it out yesterday. It seemed to help some but the pull was still pretty stiff on plane.

As for the case, I believe the previous owner told me he had replaced it with the larger some years ago. I am going to try and contact him as well as stop by storage and measure. I will definitely contact Steve and see what he has to say. I appreciate the reply's and will keep you posted.

those 361v's are great lil boats.

22p Laser II or equivalent.
6" rapid jack.

get the tab welded on (not riveted) and repainted

we can do all that right here for ya.

and i can go do a HP setup on the rig for ya if your interested. work out
all the "issues".
