Without getting too detailed, all I can say is wow. There isn't a single thing that is recognizable from the Fly Shop bridge to the Dam. Words can't describe how majestic spillway looks, it's truly amazing. There is so much fishable water, and holding good fish!
We arrived Saturday night with about an hour to spare before dark so we headed for the rock pile in the upper Evening Hole. Hard to imagine the current that could have made such a thing. From there we worked up to the cold hole and were pretty disappointed. The runs felt too deep and slow to be enjoyable "trouty" water.
The next morning we hit Spillway first thing and was immediately into fish, and really good ones at that. There are so many good runs, pockets, and pools it'd be easy to spend an entire day there. I imagine that this will quickly become the new crown jewel of the LMF. We fished that for about 3.5 hours and headed to the Fly Shop for a break.
After visiting the (awesomely redesigned) shop, we decided to give the former red zone another shot, this time starting from the Evening Hole bridge and working up. With visibility at a minimum, sight fishing the lower EH was tougher but there are definitely fish there. As I made my way up toward the rock pile, the fishing gradually improved (for me at least). Just below the pile there are some great riffles and runs and there were fish everywhere. Above the pile is good fishing too, I guess that first night was a fluke.
Bottom line is there are fish throughout the park, and some good sized fish too. I ended up landing probably 30 fish in 5 hours, and some really big fish were in that mix.
Go see the place, its a whole new adventure Which is a good thing in my view!
