Need some suggestions here... Mind you we started with the classic very cool Spider-Man combo from bass pro shops years ago, now we on the rod that has the stiffness of a wet noodle with 6 pound line. What's the next step? Mind you we not fish as much as we like to but here lately, he's been on a great bite at Lake Kiowa with beetle spins.
I'm thinking a 5-5'6" rod maybe a medium with 8-10 pound line?

Get your 8yr old a VERY NICE medium light action spinning rod with a 2500 size REALLY NICE spinning reel. Then, when they aren't fishing, it can double as a nice drop shot rig. And if the little one accells at bass fishing, they can use it for their drop shot rod as they collect more specific combos.

Tried the spinning rod route. If I had more time to work with him, I would do that. Besides I have a great drop shot and shakey head rod/reel. I'm one of those dads courtesy of my ex wife I get my son as little as possible.
But I like your way of thinking...

Academy has a nice bait cast rod that is either 5' or 5'6. I think it was their Premier Tournament Choice brand. Normally this rod retails for $20 and I think I noticed it (or others like it on sale for $12.99 as I type this reply. The color of the thread wraps on the rod reminded me of the original AllStars. You could pair it with a spincasting reel. Even though the rod is light, I think it would make an excellent rod for small crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and finesse type worms. And of course, the beetlespins which appear to be producing for him.

Agree with the other poster, at some point the next step could be a spinning rod & reel. For younger anglers & older ones too, it comes in very handy with the windy days - thus reducing the need to deal with backlashes until your child is older.

Other options could be to try and find an older model Castaway Light Baitcast model 5'6" - I think the model number was LB56 ? or to see if you can find an older pistol grip rod like a Lew's Speed Stick in a 5'6" length.

But, with your boy being 8 years old - I'm liking my earliest recommendation for the moment.

I wish I was near you. I have a real nice 5' 6" pistol grip Ugly Stik I would give to you for him.
I use the 6ft long handle models for all my fishing. They have not let me down yet in landing 6 & 7 pound fish,,,,,,,also 2s & 3s.
Let me know if there is a way.

My 9 yr old slings an ugly stick, the shorter ones are perfect.

it also depends on how he will be fishing? will he be using lures or live bait? I remember when i was his age my dad and i would go to the lake lewisville fishing barge all the time and i would show those old men how to catch some crappie! i was using an underpin combo of some sort.

haha

My dad broke me into fishing at the fishing barge as well. My first rod and reel was a Shimano "Fast Cast" 1000 sized reel on a Shimano light rod of some sort. Good memories.

I bought my 5 yr old the upgrades spiderman pole. It's a skeet Reese children's rod. I think 6' with a push button reel. Can easily take the Reel off and put whatever on. It's a good rod for that age range in my opinion.

I have just taught my 8 year old to cast my old Curado 200B's I have been saving for him. I put them on a couple of 6' Berkley Lightning rods and he casts them great. A few bird's nests here and there, but who doesn't have those.

My son who was into fishing at a very young age. I got him a mid-range rod at the time about $25. I found him the best Spincast closed face real I could find on the market, just in case he got hold of a big one. As soon as I could I taught him to throw a Baitcasting reel. He is now 32 and my tournament partner.

I know it's gonna sound crazy....

Yesterday I was fishing and a little kid came walking over with a brand new bait casting combo. On like a 5ft rod. Still had tags on it. He started spooling it up with [censored] line. I was trying to help. It wouldn't cast for [censored]. He was trying to hard. So, while I was working on his combo for him, I let him use my Team Lews Pro mounted to a Falcon Cara ST Micro medium/heavy. Throwing a weightless Senko with 12lb fluoro. He was slinging it like a pro.

My point is, if you are thinking about getting them a bait caster... Spend the money to get them a great reel. Something that has dual cadting control and lots of bearings. Something that will not cause them mechanical issues. Let them concentrate on fishing.

Great point right there. Mind you when I started out, I was using an original BB1 Lews and an old Skyline graphite rod that was circa 1982 or so. I'd like him to have something much nicer. Something he can use for years to come.
