With lake Somerville at record high levels and the C.O.E. releasing 2500 cfps (cubic feet per second) out of the lake into the spillway below the dam we have much the same situation as last summer.
Any day now the whitebass and hybrid stripers will begin to make regular raids up into the raging spillway current chasing after a feast of shad. Last year we enjoyed two straight months of this daybreak feeding fest taking a few nice fish every morning with some caught "on the fly" the fun way.

you can cut spoons from tin cans
punch holes at each end
string your spoon on a snelled leader with or without a dressed hook

simple and they work

I like the plastic spoons better but lots of materials do work well.. its all about experimenting and finding what works best in every unique situation..

There have been several post about spoon flys and how they are made. This web site gives a step by step instructions and produces a great spoon fly. They always produce fish and are easy to tie. http://bvipirate.com/spoonfly/index.html Check it out and tie some up!!

Flys used with conventional gear.. I've looked for opportunity to put my flys to the test with more than fly gear.. this is it..
I created these simple streamers & popping corks for fishing schooling whitebass and hybrids using my spinning gear when these fast moving fish are beyond the reach of the fly rod.. The popping cork does more than just pop as it is designed to look like a shad too.
