Ive fished the past 3 days for about 5 hours each morning at Calaveras Lake. I set 3 jugs with 4 hooks on each and then go fish other spots. I check them every hour or so, sometimes longer. The results have been awesome! I caught 10-12 fish each day, and 2 over 10lbs and 1 27.5lbs. all the others have been solid 2-8lbs. I release all the fish, I just like to check the jugs to see how big of fish I can get on them. Pretty much just my Curiosity.

Those are some beauties!
I've heard reports of jug lines being popular out there recently.
Are you setting them out in the main lake?
Reason I ask is there was a lake rule that jug lines had to be set north of the RR bridge and north of the high lines only, and I've noticed several over by the dam.
Just wondering if that's changed.

Chicken Breast. That's all I ever put on jugs. Most of the time that's all I use on rod and reel as well.

Great point, and you're right as far as I know. I've read they are supposed to be north of the rr tracks and power lines. however, as long as they are marked properly and the correct colors, the game wardens don't seem to enforce that rule. I only put the jugs out on the weekdays because there is low boat traffic. on the weekends, jugs in the main lake are out of the question. I caught these in the main lake to answer the question lol.

Main lake?

I guess they don't enforce the rules any longer since Thousand Trails took over.
I've heard that some guides are now using jug lines as well.

I've got some jug lines I made up a while back so I need to dust them off and sharpen the hooks! thumb

Guides have been dropping jugs out there in the main lake for awhile now. When the reds are slow, like right now, they have a back up plan to put fish on the boat I guess.. but jugs are def working great right now!

This is the zoning map taken from their site before it went down. Below are the rules:
Calaveras Lake is zoned for different water activities - TPWD REGULATIONS ALSO APPLY.
ZONE 1 is reserved for fishing, motor boating, wind and kite surfing, waterskiing and personal watercraft use. NO trotlines, juglines or throwlines allowed.
ZONE 2 is reserved for motor boating and fishing, including
trotlines, juglines or throwlines. NO waterskiing, sail or wind surfing or personal watercraft is allowed.
ZONE 3 is controlled by CPS Energy and is off limits to recreationists. Do not enter this area.

Unfortunately they do not enforce the rules so many people just do not follow them any more. Sad.....

The problem lies if it is truely a problem, with Thousand Trails failing to enforce the LAKE RULES that were established and put in place back when SARA (San Antonio River Authority) ran the lake from day 1.
They had a boat that one of the SARA officers used to patrol the lake and enforce the rules and also tow in stranded boaters and warn of storms approaching.
Thousand Trails is only concerned about collecting the money at the gate and keeping the public away from the RV'ers.
You walk into the office and complain about something, you'll get a smile and maybe a laugh but that's about it.
They don't even enforce the two rod limit for bank fishers and the sign as you drive in is for the complainers to think they are doing something about it.
There are other rules I can tell you about but it does no good to complain.
What I see possibly happening with the jug lines is tempers flaring as more people attempt to use them which they will, and with a limit of 100 hooks per person a single person can legally cover the lake with jugs.
Also the guides even though they are now using them, will eventually get butt hurt when others try to do the same thing and cause them to tangle their outriggers on jug lines.
Yes, it could get interesting as I stated, and those rules were put in place for a reason long ago.

A few years back two guides ended up in court because one guide crossed the other guides lines. It was highly publicized and made the local news.
What happens now when one's jugs get towed away by someone trolling?
Or a jug line get wound up in someones (guides) prop and the jug has the owners name on it, and it's illegally placed?

It is a shame. But, if there is no one watching, and no camera, is it ok to speed in a school zone? People complain about "big brother" all the time but then when "big brother" isn't around they think the rules no longer apply... God forbid a jet skier or wake boarder gets tangled up in a jug line, then you'll see the laws suits and Thousands trails will have an issue defending themselves.
Personally I follow the zoning rules and if I'm drift fishing the main lake area and happen to tangle with a jugline, the jug line will be cut.

Exactly!
It would be bad for the person who put the jug line out, since even though the rule isn't enforced, it's still illegal until the rule is officially changed, and to my knowledge it is not!
