I think that you will catch more trash fish with shrimp and more numbers of fish but imho, finger mullet will produce the more quality fish. Just my thoughts.

If you are fishing the lights at night, then I would also have some live shrimp & popping cork. Shrimp under lights will should catch you a lot of sand trout/speckled trout which is still pretty fun. Fishing under lights, usually the trout and flounder will take the bait before the trash fish can get to it. BUT like I said before, I still think that finger mullet will catch you the BETTER fish because the hardheads and little fish won't usually mess with them except if you fish on the bottom. Biggest problem with any live bait is the stinking pinfish which just tear anything up. Good luck and catch a bunch.

yes its very fun , i use some TTF gig heads that glow in the dark and works very good, but most of the bites are small spekled trout , and same think with live shrimp, i never try live mullet in the pier, hope produce big trouts ,,, like the last time

In my experience fishing at both those location is that port isabel has a tremendous amount of fishing pressure. I think any stripped down rig set up with a good live bait will work. Having said that I noticed they go in certain feeding gears, some times the only thing they will bite on is shrimp. Having said that I also believe using the appropriate sized bait is the most important. Few weeks ago I was catching trout all night there in port isabel but the shrimp they had for sale was well "shrimpy"(small) so I got a ton of undersized although the largest shrimps I had produced a couple of keepers. I usually try it all and see what's working that night. That same night I stumbled across a school of trout under a light and they hit everything I threw at them hard baits, cranks, different kinds and sizes of soft plastics, shrimp. Out of the dozens I caught in that school there was only 1 keeper which was caught on that large shrimp. Alas I have to admit the only thing I didn't have was live finger mullets that night, maybe I would have caught a lunker...
