I have 4 Abu Garcias 6500c's and I believe I have put different line on all of them. Right now I have only used braided line but I wanted to know what mono line what you recommend for catfishing? Right now I run between 30-60 lb test as I take my poles to the coast if I have free time. I have noticed that some braided line is rougher feeling and I think that is causing added drag shortening my casting distance. What do you recommend?

The Round Reels aren't very good for casting. That are great for using to either fish vertically or on a trolling rig where you just roll out line and then setup the bait clicker. When I use them on rods with the downrigger, I typically use braided line at 30# and then use a mono leader of Berkley's trilene Big Game in a 20# at 6'.

Especially for piers, I love the 30# braid in a baitcaster like the 6500C. It will give you the rub resistance you need. Only issue to worry about is height about water, some piers can be 100' above water level and you will definitely want to tie on a leader. The 6500C is perfect for vertical fishing.

For jetty fishing, I prefer a spinning reel. It will cast better without having to spin the reel during the cast, so you will get farther and without any birdnests with a wide choice of bait weights. Spinning reel sizes vary and you will need one based on what you want to do. I like Okuma Coronado reels Bass Pro carries. Not too expensive and great saltwater reels. You can get one sized for what you want. Some like to surf fish and others are looking for a more active cast and retrieve pattern.

What kind of braid are you using?

I prefer PowerPro standard. I am not fond of the super slick version.

Yes power pro is one of the best. I started using Cabelad Ugly cat braid...it's pretty good to.

I will have to respectfully disagree with Capt Craig with his statement that round reels are not good for casting.
http://www.wideopenspaces.com/top-5-fishing-reels-long-distance-surfcasting/
The link above shows similar reels to those used in distance casting competition. They are different from the Abu Garcia 6500C3 in that they have no level wind. Many people can easily cast 100+ yards with a 6500C3 using a 3-5oz weight and a 10' rod. Of course with bait that distance is shortened.

I am partial to Offshore Angler monofilament 20lb test sold at Bass Pro Shops. It's surprisingly inexpensive, reliable and strong. In a pinch, I'll use Berkley Big Game 20lb test. I know a few people that swear by Andes monofilament.
