Hi all,
I'm looking at building a rectangle condo 6' long x 4' wide x 4' tall with 4" drain pipe intertwined and am curious as to what you guys use for glue? Do you use normal pvc glue and primer or something else? I ask because the odor is very strong for at least some time frame. Does the odor drive away the fish? Thanks.

I would go ahead with the normal pvc glue. It cures fast and it could take several weeks or even longer for the fish to find the condo. If smell was a problem, I think it would be non-existent by then. Just my thoughts, maybe someone else knows better.
To whom much is given, much is required.

Sounds good to me, but make sure that you use some rough grit sandpaper on the pvc, so the algae will stick to it faster.
you know, nothing wrong with seven men who met on the internet going for a swim together

I know many of you have talked about using cedar trees for condos. I have been told they are great, but I also have heard that the evergreen on them makes an odor or gas that the fish do not like. Does anyone have any input on this? I would assume you would want the tree to brown up before sinking?

I've put lots of cedar out and catch fish on them all the time, so they do work. IMHO I think PVC takes longer to draw in fish, BUT... It's harder to see on a graph and will last forever. I like to put some of both side by side.

Thx SLABXPRESS. How long after you put out a cedar would you say it starts to hold fish?

Thx SLABXPRESS. How long after you put out a cedar would you say it starts to hold fish? You'll pick up a stray fish or two after week or so, if fish are already in the area. But it's been my experience that cedar doesn't hold crappie consistently for a few months. I also like to put BPs where there's no cover. Those spots seem to take longer to draw fish, but seem to hold them better once established. Like any natural brush though, they need to be replenished every few years.

Use willow trees. They don't put off any smells or gas, fish love them and if put them in a good location they will hold fish fast.

Cedars will have fish on them within 48 hrs if there is crappie in the lake. I have put out cedar trees in the morning and caught good crappie on them in the afternoon. cedars will last 8-12 years with willows lasting about 2-3 years. I put out out a cedar top Monday and caught fish off of it Tuesday afternoon. Cedars, cypress and bois d arc are the longest lasting bp's you can put out other than pvc and for me pvc is way down the list of preferred bp's.

It makes sense that crappie would be attracted to natural trees like cedar faster than pvc so it seems that mixing the 2 might be ideal. I'm planning on building a rectangle structure approximately 6 or 7 ft long and 4 or 5 foot square sides, basically a rectangle with pvc sides and some 4" drain pipe intertwined. It certainly wouldn't hurt to attack a couple of 5 or 6 foot cedar trees to that, maybe on a couple on the long sides, that way it would draw fish relatively soon but have the longetivity of pvc......

Sunk my crappie condos (cedar trees) a week ago today. I've fished them twice within the week and have caught few keepers and a lot of baby crappie. I'm hoping they will start to hold bigger fish soon.
