My fishing partner has been experiencing a serious bout of cabin fever with all of the recent flooding and lake closures.

He's prefers to target bass - which is cool with me.

Spent the day on Lake Athens today. I noticed lots of lilypads, emergent and submergent grass, a single bridge by the boat ramp and several docks dotted around the lake.

My question, does Lake Athens have a good population of crappie and do you have a preferred plan or pattern (in general) that is consistently successful for you as a crappie angler on this beautiful by tiny lake - compared to most in the metroplex?

230 views and no comments about crappie fishing on Lake Athens. Wow! I thought at least a couple of you might have some info or insight on Lake Athens as a crappie fishery.

My buddy lives across the street from the ramp and he said he can't catch them very often. Picky little fish. He said it was a BASS HOLE!

I fished it 2 weeks ago for 6 hours and had 4 small keepers if that helps.

They are hard to find at times, but when you do find them you'll limit. Look for brush 16 ft+ deep, baby crappie slab bandits were the ticket a few weeks ago.

I have a good friend who crappie fishes Athens from time to time. I've never been close to there, but he tells me the lake is really clear. He eases around and finds brushpiles in fairly deep water, marks them, then backs off and casts jigs over the top of the piles. I've seen some pictures of some nice stringers that he's taken from there.

I think we're headed back to Lake Athens this weekend. I will keep all of the comments in mind.

Noticed what appeared to be some isolated 3' to 4' foot stumps in 10-12 ft of water last weekend and the FF marked fish suspended off of and around those stumps. Now I need to find out if it's crappie, white bass or largemouth.

White crappie record is only 2.01. Surely someone has caught some larger fish. Hope you do well. Report back on the trip if you can, Jeff.

I live near it but have never been on it. Anyone needed a back seat filled all expenses on me. I live on Callender lake but have not been on it either. Soon I'll have a running boat but still need help in learning how to target fish on Athens and calendar.
