Took it to the Yamaha guys and they said I tore my gear casing. So if it didn't mess it to bad I think I can just have it rebuilt if not I'm in need for a new lower unit. I'm not real sure only my second boat and first problem.. Any recommendation where to take it around houston?

Best around, Kolby. Sorry about your boat. But tore your gear case? The gear case is what the lower unit is enclosed in. It's the metal piece with the nose cone and the skeg that bolts onto the drive shaft housing. I've never heard of tearing a gear case unless they meant you tore up the inside of your gear case.

Well I obviously stated wrong, I hit the stump at the dock backing up and the motor stalled out. Ran it until 10am then heading to the yamaha guys bc it didn't sound right then it started whistling and quit turning the prop. Put it in gear and you can still spin the prop freely. In forward and reverse.

Please excuse me if I stated wrong.

Kolby, after what Fouz just said, I wonder if those Yamaha guys saw you were missing most of your skeg and just assumed all of that happened at the same time and thought it was toast?

Fouz,
You could spin the prop (and prop shaft, so most likely not a spun hub) with the shifter in forward or reverse. My thoughts were broken shift linkage? There was no noise or grinding when you'd spin the prop, and there was no wobble. There was however some "in and out" play that didn't seem right, about 1/2" or so.

Thoughts?

If you backed into something and the prop now "spins freely" in gear, my guess is you have a pressed in prop hub and you spun it.

Hard to say without seeing it, but the way you describe it that sounds like it could be the issue.

Call your insurance company also. I've messed mine up twice out there and insurance covered a lot of the cost

I thought I spun a hub or had lower unit issues trying to get on plane practicing for the BFL on the Red a while back. I called my buddy to come get me. He turned around and came back to follow me back to the ramp, he came up beside me and said, hey dumb arse............your power poles are down.

I felt really stupid, but wouldn't be the first stupid thing I've done.

Thanks, Billy

Sounds like a busted pinion gear to me, but I'm no expert. Take it to a reputable shop like Strack's, Kolby.

I wonder how many got Forked this past weekend. I saw way to many boats flying in dangerous water.

Insurance #1 thing to make contact with your agent today..
Mine when out in the legends tourney last month, $4150.00
the claim covered $ 3300.00 I covered the rest.
If your boat is still at Fork, take it to Chuck at Service Marine on 515..
Top notch service and workmanship...

good to see you as well ken, can you please give me zach Hughes number? He without hesitation offered his boat for us to fish out of. What an awesome thing for him to do only knowing me for a day and the fact he needs it to take clients out.
