Planning on going to cabelas tomorrow to get some more gear to start fishing out of my kayak and want to get one good rod and reel for catching catfish. What would be a good choice to go with. Don't want something cheap, as I want it to last for a very long time. Thinking around 200 for a reel.

Thanks

Walter

What stands out to me is the abu garcia ammbassador c3 6500, c3 7000, or the new c4?
Or the daiwa luna which is the most expensive of all them.
Or shimano Calcutta?

What would be my best option. I have about 150 in points so that will take a good bit off one of the nicer reels.

Mostly eating size channels. But would like a good quality rod and reel that will last for a long time. Would rather buy quality now. Also won't buy from walmart.

For channels, I have been using Abu 5500 C3's and 5600 C4's with the Ugly Stik GX2 medium and medium heavy rods . However, last weekend I took a new setup that was the Ugly Stik Pro-Lite 6'0 medium heavy spinning rod with the Academy H20 Maxim spinning reel and really liked it. That setup with a full spool of Power Pro Slick 30lb braid was just under $100. Bought the reels online for 29 each and the rod was 37 at Wally World. . The 5500/5600 setups are around 170 each with braided line. The 6'0 medium heavy spinning rods were real easy to set the hook and had good backbone . For Blues , I use the white Ugly Stik 7'0 medium heavy rods with 6500/6600 Abu's. To each is own , this is what works for me. I don't think the Pro Angler rods are but just a few dollars more. Just nobody sells them close and I don't like to wait. Only been fishing a couple years now and have 42 catfish set-up's.

A 6500 or 7000, if just buying one the 7000. I like Ugly sticks but anything as good or better would be fine. Sometimes when you are fishing for eater size channels or blues a big flat or blue may not know what you are doing so better equipment could be good.

A Swedish ABU 6500 on an Ugly Stick rod will last you almost forever. I'm still using one that I've had for about 45 years!! A 6500 has a clicker and the 5500 doesn't. Also the casting is about the same but you have more line if you need it. The Ugly Stick rod has a soft tip and an almost unbreakable backbone. I like the C-3 but that is just my preference. The old 6500 that I've had forever has bushings and no bearings at all and will out cast a C-3.

You know that old saying "Some people march to the beat of a different drummer."? I don't listen to a drum at all and have meandered through life instead of marching.

When at Cabellas compare Whoopin sticks to Ugly sticks (same rod) also try to cast a slip cork rig with 1/4 oz weight with an ABU

Thanks for all the info everyone. I picked up two c3 6500's today and two ugly stick gx2's. We will see how this goes. Had a bunch of cabelas points so I got some other gear and stuff for my kayak and only cost me a few bucks out of pocket which ended up being what the tax was.

Where does everyone like to buy their terminal gear as cabelas only has small packages and would rather buy a few than that at a time to save some money and have them on hand.
