The bass partner and I headed over to Lake Athens this morning. The morning half of the fishing adventure ended abruptly as an oil leak was noticed and we had to return to the ramp, trailer over to Tyler and fix the problem. Returned to the lake after fixing the issue and stopping off to have a bit to eat at a fantastic roadside diner. Second half went better. Given the hour of the day, I was determined to not leave the lake with a 'skunk' for my efforts. Connected a small silver safety pin type spinner to a 1/16th unpainted jighead. After tying a satisfactory knot to the spinner arm I carefully attached a white 2" Berkley Power Grub onto the jighead and commenced to casting to several patches of lilypads. In short order I connected with a sizable sunfish. I was practically dancing on the backend of the boat. I told my fishing partner it was worth the entire effort and trip to Lake Athens on this day. My fishing partner thought I was nuts and I went on to explain how I have been wanting to catch a nice size sunfish to take a picture and contribute to the Bluegill/Sunfish section of TFF. Well that goal became a reality today and I was fortunate to capture a couple of others in the same size range and display of colors. Mission accomplished!

Nice fish. Hopefully you get hooked on catching some sunnies and you will catch a few more. They are a blast to catch on ultra light rigs.

Yes. The Bass Pro Shops visor is turned backwards from the ride across the lake. Not the most flattering of pics. The real celebrity was mister Bluegill.

Nice Gill!. You may want to consider getting a ultra light rig to carry with you. If the Bass fishing is slow you can always go to your ultra light! Again super Gill and a nice post.

Laker One,
I was using an ultralight. Daiwa Crossfire spinning rod.
I had been casting a 3/8 ounce spinnerbait in some of the openings of the American Pondweed and I noticed a couple of bluegills chased and hammered the willow leaf blades.
So being the prepared boyscout I am, I had a safety pin type spinner with a small curly tail tied on the UL rod.
Called Lake Athens today to verify the water levels haven't changed substantially since TS Bill passed through - so it appears Sunday's trip to Lake Athens is 'ON'.
Ready for Round 2.
I know Bluegills are good to eat. All of my fishing at the lake for these beauties will purely be for CPR so someone else can have the chance to have fun too!
