Well it seems that Gar will take a popper, I was fishing the Colorado at Smithville near my home this morning and this little fellow hit the popper he measured 37 inches and I had a real problem trying to get him into the kayak.
My net was too small and I couldn't tail him too slippery so I got his head in the net and then lent over the side and flipped him into the kayak

Very nice Mike. Boga grips work wonderfully on those toothy creatures. I love catching gar - particularly on the flats.

Love seeing non-rope fly gar!! Great fish congrats!

I have used rope flys in the past - I will not use them and I would caution and steer anyone away from using them they are not safe for the fish or for the angler when trying to untangle then from the fishes teeth - unless you plan to eat the gar - don't use rope flys.

I'm with you there Lone Star. I have found that using a small hook size and diameter helps increase hook ups. They still jump and manage to throw the hook but it's fun to get a jump or two out of them anyway.

Nice fish! What do you guys think is the best way to handle them when you get them in? I never feel comfortable handling those things.
