I've been reading through the pages and wouldn't mind someone's opinion. I'm looking for a SOT boat to do some fishing and paddling. 90% of it will be on Lake Grapevine. I've had a Wilderness 2 person in the past and I could manage it just fine by myself and I know not to get a cheap paddle. With that said do you think any of these would make for a good first purchase SOT? I have dry bags, bungees, trailer, and other stuff. I don't think I will ever add a fish finder, maybe LEDs.

http://www.perceptionkayaks.com/products/pescador-120-angler <- same price through Father's Day.

Is there anything else in that price range? I can go up some if I need to but I'd like to have the kayak, paddle, and vest done for under 1k.

Thanks!

The Pescador line of kayaks are based on the older Wilderness Tarpon molds.

They paddle well and are stable enough for fishing but aren't laid out for standing up if that's a big deal to you.

I bought one for my kid a couple of years ago and would say that it's a best buy in the price range.

Have you looked at Academy and the Ocean Kayak Prowler 13?
Great kayak for all around use!

I'm looking at it now. I just wish it was on sale. Do you think the narrower profile is an issue?

28"?

It's not going to be a stable as some of the wider kayaks that you can stand in, but it's got both primary and secondary stability.
This is where you need to demo to see for yourself.
My first kayak was an OK 28" wide and I didn't have a problem and never turtled, but again don't go by what someone claims without testing out the kayaks you like.

Probably the most important thing to consider would be how big are you!
The Prowler has a max weight cap. of 400-450# so it's got a lot of room for a big guy plus gear.
It's also pretty light weight at 56# so it would be easy to handle.

$300 prowler would be hard for me to pass up if I was in the market, especially since you already have a trailer

Go with the Ascend you listed, absolute best value. Friend got one last year & he's digging it.
The seat makes a huge difference.

They do sound like a good deal!
Someone posted about them a long time back and then they kind of fell off the radar.

I don't push any certain brand because I believe now there are many who have entered the market that put out good products. My signature only states what I own, and I'm not saying Wilderness is the only way to go!
I do believe people should do their own research! Nothing wrong with asking for help, but the ultimate choice is up to the individual because what one person likes doesn't mean everyone else will also.

I found a Pescador 12 at Gander Mt on clearance for 374 yesterday. It's not exactly what I wanted but I couldn't pass up the price.

Thanks for the help everyone!
