What is everyone's opinion on which is a better unit? I have had a boat for 4 years now fishing every chance I can and been playing around with dads Humminbird 798 si but don't really know to much about it. Looking to buy one for my own boat now and just want everyone's opinion on the different brands. Thanks

I've had Lowrance for most of my fishing years but I think I'd get a Garmin this time. Maybe an Humminbird Onix if the price were right. Bad thing about Garmin is you have to use their map card and they don't cover a lot of Texas.

I'm an old Lowrance user for years on my Skeeters. Use Humminbird on my kayaks. This past year, I needed to replace my Lowrance units with something updated. Checked around and spent a good deal of time at Bass Pro talking and looking and playing with the units. Chose the Garmin GPSMap1080 over Lowrance and Humminbird. Also bought an echoMap for the bow. Outstanding units and the best part of them is the GPS. Excellent mapping...but what would you expect from Garmin. Both units network together and I can share down-vu and side-vu using 800 Mhz Chirp.
I'll never go back and glad I made the choice.

I use Lowrance, but am impressed by what I've seen from Garmin. Also, you might get a better response to this if it were posted in the equipment section.

Looking to buy one for my own boat now and just want everyone's opinion on the different brands. Thanks If you want the imaging technology like the 798 SI unit has, Raymarine, Garmin, Humminbird and Lowrance have models with it. You can't make a bad choice with any of them. One may do a particular function better than the others. Garmin is just getting into that technology and there is not enough user experience yet to fully compare them to the others. There is a lot of marketing, hope and anticipation, but not backed up with wide usage yet.

My first SI unit was a Bird 998c. It was nice but I didn't like the 2d on it. Sold it last year and invested this year in two garmins with SI both 7" screens. I love them so far, and hope it continues to get better as I learn more about them. That's my

My first was a flasher with the cylindrical transducer mounted in a toilet plunger glued to the floor of the boat. I think that was a Lowrance.
I just replaced an old Lowrance gps/depthfinder combo after 8 years of service. I destroyed it by accidently hooking my battery up backwards. I replaced it with a Lowrance Elite-7 CHIRP combo. I just put it in yesterday- I hope to get 8 more years out of this one.

Only got to play with Garmin demo stuff but I jave used bird and lowrance units a good bit. My opinion is Humminbird seems the simplest to use and has decent customer service. Lowrance is a bit more complex and can give you better images in 2d and downscan if you tinker with settings but customer service is pretty poor. Garmin seems like good all around stuff simple to use and great images but pricey and new to the game. I see them taking market share as more folks make the switch. I think the panoptix is the beginning of what's going to be the new standard in electronics, real time images vs scrolling.

Oh, didn't like the way hummingbird info on side of screen takes up screen space rather than superimposed. Will have the garmin on dash and move lowarance elite 5 to trolling motor.

I just went from an Old school Hummingbird 100SX to a Garmin 73SV I played around for at least an hour at BP asking all kinds of Dumb Questions about all three Brands of Fish Finders in the 700-1200 Dollar Range .
I would keep going back to the Garmin Unit it felt the Easiest to Navigate and since buying I couldn't be More happy with my purchase .

I have a byrd 899 si di combo and like my smart phone it makes me feel stupid, but it is a great tool(operator error is my only problem) hopefully I will get better with it. The gps is fantastic. The Down imaging is flawless. Get back with me in 5 years!
Randy I'm in good shape for the shape I'm in!
