Hey Guys. . . First time poster here in the Bluegill/Sunfish section. Sorry for the title as I call them perch. My old man is getting more and more into trot lines and jug lines for yellow cat. Talked to him yesterday and asked him what he wanted for Fathers Day. He told me he wants a really nice perch trap. I have done some research and found quite a few. I was just wondering if anyone know of someone in the DFW area that sells them. Don't really want to make my own and don't really want one shipped. Thanks for your help guys!!

Bass Pro Shop has several live bait traps that they sell. You may want to give them a try!

Lots of rules and regulations with those things. Read up and be careful.

Saw the ones at Bass Pro and Academy. Anyone have any experience with them? Any good? As good as the rest? Thanks for the heads up on the regulations. I have actually checked in on them and for the lakehouse he is able to us them. Basically he will be tying it off to our crappie dock for a few hours at a time to get enough for the jug lines.

Are you talking about a minnow/baitfish trap? Perch traps are only legal in salt water. The regulation on minnow traps relate to the size of the mouth of the trap.

Josh, here's a good thread from a few years ago right here on the TFF Open Freshwater Discussion that has some useful information that will help you. trapping perch Summary: not longer than 24" and not larger than 1" x 3" opening. Sunfish aka "perch" are non-game species in Texas. I'd think you could catch enough on a size 10 cricket hook with mealworms fished in the same locations you would set out a perch trap to be plenty for bait. BUT, when you ask your dad what he wants for Father's day and he tells you what he'd really like to have... I wish my dad was still around so I could ask him what he wants for father's day. Enjoy every second you can with him while he's still here to do that with. Hope you guys both have a super happy fathers day!

So I read the rules as I can Legally use a perch trap to trap them b/c they are a non game species. Is my logic correct? Thanks for the link to the old thread Jon. And awesome words. I lost my mother 4 years ago to breast cancer at just 51 years old. Spend as much time and create as many memories as possible is close to my heart.

Josh, sorry to hear about your mother - Tough deal there. My interpretation of the rules is same as your's about legally catching non-game fish in a minnow trap.. from TPWD site: legal devices for fish Minnow TrapMay be used to take NONGAME fish only. Trap may not exceed 24 inches in length. The throat may not exceed 1 inch by 3 inches. Gear tag valid for only 10 days must be visibly attached. Only thing is I would suggest to call it a minnow trap and not a perch trap just to avoid the possibility of confusion with the saltwater perch trap.
