whats the difference or benefit of one vs the other?

Horizontal (eye in front of jig head)--typically will flip, swim, and fall through grass, timber, and other vegetation better.



Vertical (eye on top of jig head) --Falls more vertically. Typically will stand up better and can be dragged along rocks with less damage to the line.

What about the position of the eyelet on the hook? Some are in line with the hook point and some are perpendicular to the hook point.

I looked at the jigs at Tackle Warehouse and the grass jigs were just about an even split between in line and perpendicular but most of the football head jigs were perpendicular to the hook point.

Anyone know what the reasoning for that is?

easier for fball jigs to come over rocky structure with the line tie like that and the grass jigs are designed like tht to come through weeds without them hanging on and making you take the weeds off before every cast

That's not how I have always heard the comparision.

Horizontal (or flay eye) verses Vertical are just the orientation of the eye on the lead head

All styles of jigs (minus Swim) seem to have both from various manufactureres

Just a personal preference thing

I like a vertical line tie when fishing rocks-you get less line abrasion with the line tie
on top. Don't have to cut and re-tie as often.
