im getting my first baitcaster setup for fathers day. bass pro pro qualifier reel 7.1.1 gear ratio with 7'1" 13 fishing omen black rod. but im not sure which power i should go with for the rod. medium or medium/heavy? i want to be able to cast alot of lighter lures (especially weightless senko type baits) but want enough backbone to set the hook properly if i hook into a big bass. any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

If you want to be able to cast light lures, I'd go with the medium. It'll still have plenty of backbone to drive a hook home on bigger fish.

MH. Depending on the foliage around the ponds you fish... you may want to consider a shorter rod. It's never fun getting it stuck in the branches/trees.

I use a medium heavy Falcon for weightless Senkos. Works really well.

As a owner of a couple omens you definitely want to go with a medium...the medium heavy has way too much backbone in my opinion for a pond. I used my medium heavy yesterday and I damn near literally ripped the trebles out of the lips of some of the fish. Great rods!

I do know that Falcons tend to fish softer than the power rating. They do measure close to power averages based on the G Loomis "standard". But just fish lighter than they are.

Medium heavy for all around but 13 omens med fast is a pretty stiff rod for a med and you could use it for a lot lighter stuff.
