I'm headed down there this weekend for a conference. I'm thinking I'll be fishing the surf, but hoping to get some since of direction as to where to go. I'm staying at the Isla Grand Beach Resort, but I'll be driving down, so I have the ability to go pretty much anywhere unless a 4 wheel drive is necessary.

Also, any recommendations on the best place to eat seafood? I jumped on Trip Advisor and have a short list going.

Thanks y'all!

Try Big Daddys for seafood. Pretty good stuff. Big Donkey for Mexican.

Dirty Al's if you want some down south cooking at a reasonable rate. As per the surf just check seaweed levels and beach driving condition at spadre.com. If it says any thing other than " none" I wouldn't waste my time. 4x4 is nice but even that doesnt guarantee anything out there. Just stick to the waters edge and keep your wits about you.
Have you read this yet? http://www.stripersonline.com/surftalk/topic/59116-reading-the-water/
If not, I would. Go as far north as you dare on the surf and and find surf structure and there will be something to eat your bait.

Great read!

I'm pretty much a little b!t(h when it comes to driving on the sand, but I'm going to give it a go.

Thanks for brewery suggestion!

Yeah poppy is great over there. I found a break between the sand bar the created a washout threw on the north side because it was the wind blown side. Threw a cut piggy bait and 5 minutes later I caught a 41 inch bull.
+1 on the brewery, try the trout IPA.

What's a good bait to use besides dead shrimp. I've only been there once before and caught tiny hardheads...boring, with a surf rod. Does anything bite on big grubs. I'm headed out there soon and would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Highbread, A big live finger mullet or small live palm mullet is hard to beat down here.

Highbread, try the jetty area in the park at the South tip of the island. If you can get the mullet, that is a great way to go. Use them live or if dead they make a great cut bait. You may want to try shrimp flavored Fishbites.
