I have a buddy who just bought an 18ft aluminum boat and is wanting to upgrade his trolling motor... He is wondering if there such thing as too big of a trolling motor for a boat like this?

I don't think so. But an aluminum 18fter doesn't need a 101lb thrust trolling motor. A 70-80lb thrust should be plenty for that boat.

I cannot recall anyone ever saying they felt like they bought too big a TM. Heard plenty say they wish they had bought bigger though.

the exception is the terrova and ulterras. You dont want too much on them or they wont function as well for some of their features

Not necessarily too big but weight should be a consideration, 18ft aluminum boat and a 36 volt TM (3-batteries for TM)then another cranking battery? I would consider a 24 volt system. Plenty of power for 18ft.
