I've personally never used them, but I see lots of posts from people using Avets for sharks, rays, and other big fish on the coast.

Everyone should believe in something; I believe Ill go fishing.

I got one I've used a few times. So far it's brought in 4-5 bull reds and a 6' black tip.

I own 8 of them from sx-80w. They're built like tanks, but aren't the smoothest and the clicker on the mxl is useless unless your standing right next to it.

I have multiple avet reels. I bought them for nearshore fishing. I can't remember the exact models I have but they are on the small end of the avet product line. We have landed many 75Lb + sharks, blackfin tuna, cobia, etc. I dont think avet makes a bad reel. If you half way take care of them they will last forever. I don't do much saltwater fishing anymore. We use them a ton when live bait fishing hybrids and winter catfishing. Again, I don't remember what models I have but you can hear the bait clicker on mine from the opposite side of the lake.

Had to Google to find what they are. They look like tanks and I'm sure they're great, but we're talking $250 catfish reels?

I have 20 rod holders so 250x20= $5000 in reels..... whoa.

Due to financial reasons I will have to continue picking up ebay abu's.

Take a look at Penn's Fathom and Release's SG if you're gonna drop that much coin...

I've got an Avet MXJ that I like a lot. I static magged it and it casts a mile now. It is definitely overkill for catfish but if you want a reel that will pull double duty at the coast then it's a great option. I also want to get my hands on a Penn Fathom. Looks like an outstanding reel and I'm sure it's easier to cast than an Avet.

And by the way, unless you bought the MC version do not think you are going to sling that reel without magging it. I tried and tried and all I ended up with was a bloody stump of a thumb. That spool gets moving FAST!!!!

It's just a small strong magnet that I had laying around the house. You basically just glue it inside the frame close to the spool. Do a google search for "static mag an Avet". There are several how-to articles, most of which use rare earth magnets like you find in a hard drive. It's really easy to do and mostly trial and error. I can toss six ounces 120 yards on an 11' Penn Prevail with 25lb mono without thumbing the spool at all. It's probably a little over magged but I like it. Also pull it apart, clean the grease out of the bearings and put some oil on them. That will also get you some distance.

I have 2 Avets, love them built like a tank, never any kind of problems, mine are big salt water reels a 30 Pro wide and a 50 Trx wide, the 30 is a real work horse. The Trx is one of the few reels that will pull 100+ lb drag! It will get you in trouble if your not used to it. It is overkill!
