I'm relocating to the Austin area and want some opinions on fishing there. I'm retired and rarely fish the weekend. I will be fishing from Oct thru May. Based on fishing which would you prefer or what other town in the area? Thanks.

Bastrop is one of the better lakes in the state for numbers. You don't here much about Marble Falls but that little lake has some big ones in it. I'd rather live in Marble Falls because of its location in the hill country and proximity to other lakes like Buchanan, Travis and LBJ. Also, Bluebonnet Cafe

Just left Marble Falls.- not much to speak of. It's small and the ramp is a real pain due to steep pitch. LBJ would be a better option. Don't know much about Bastrop. Good luck.

... Your crazy if you think marble falls is not much to speak of. that is a GREAT little lake man. I mean AWESOME for numbers. The ramp pitch isn't that steep and it is HUGE. the only issue I have is it has the random "humps" in it and sometimes they can drag the trailer a bit cause of the angles. That lake has a BUNCH of guadalupe's too...
Bastrop is a power plant lake, which is nice in the winter. Is beautiful and awesome for number as well... actually a lot of the same baits will work at both of those lakes....
for Living near, I'd live near marble falls... More lake more stuff... But it is totally worth the drive over to bastrop for a day trip or camp a couple days

Lake Bastrop dam is just fine. It was the pond dam in the SP that failed.

if you are retiring and moving, I would move to the marble falls area, you will have 4 lakes within an hour drive to be able to fish. Bastrop you are an hour drive from the closest other lake
Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst

Bastrop just had the dam break! NO IT DIDN'T... you didnt actually read the headline. A 7ish acre lake at Bastrop state park broke... Go read and stop passing around bad info

But it is totally worth the drive over to bastrop for a day trip or camp a couple days i should probably clarify, I fished it one day. I thought it was a nice little lake, but small. If I were moving, I would definitely choose Marble Falls due to the beauty of the community and people, and the close proximity of fishing options. As for the MF ramp. It was so steep, I had a lot of trouble loading my boat due to the ramp steepness and that little hump near the water. It put my bow below the front bumper on my trailer and I exhausted myself lifting my boat bow above it. Was quite a feat and I hear the same from others. Depending on your boat, you may not have the same problem.

There is a second ramp on lake Marble Falls. It is off avenue j in a park. It is in a creek off the main lake. This may be a better choice of ramps.

if those are your only two choices, Marble Falls.
Any of the small towns northwest of Austin would be great though.
