 What size split rings?

I have a bunch of painted baits in need of hooks, but I don't want to skimp on the split rings. What size do y'all use and do you use stainless steel?

I use stainless on the hooks and oval on the line ties I use mainly size 6 on squarebills and medium divers and 7 on deep divers.

I have a bunch of painted baits in need of hooks, but I don't want to skimp on the split rings. What size do y'all use and do you use stainless steel? i use both nickel steel and stainless. typically in sizes 2,3 or 4 (5, 6 or 7mm), round, and standard or heavy duty. i never use the fine. stainless is softer than the nickel steel and does not have the "spring" that nickel has. if you spread stainless a little too far it will not close back up. usually get them in bulk from barlows tackle in richardson.

Good catch rick, I should have said 6 and 7mm not size 6 and 7 those are huge rings like for a bladed jig.

Good catch rick, I should have said 6 and 7mm not size 6 and 7 those are huge rings like for a bladed jig. i thought that's what you meant.

I agree 100% with BC and Brad. Barlow's #5, or #6 stainless steel rings seem to fit the bill for hook sizes 2,4 and 6. Gotta' be careful not to twist the rings.....once they're sprung they don't close properly. The flat nickle rings are very nice, but a little too $$ for my personal use. If you plan on selling your work they might be a good option.

what size hooks do y'all like I have a few that need some hooks 2,4,6,8 depending on the size of the lure. one important thing is to use hooks that will not get tangled with one another. i personally like mustad 2x or 3x short shanks, mustad kvd triple grip in red and silver, or mustad triple grip. sometime i'll put a short shank on the back hook ring and a standard on the front or the opposite way. i will go to #2 on a bigger lure. for my dressed trebles i typically use #4, 6, or 8 with a standard shank.
