Pelicans post about fishing with his dad got me thinking about something. I know that my dad used to wake me up early, and I mean early on Saturday mornings so we could beat everybody else to "that spot". We mainly bank fished the rivers for catfish and fished a lot of farm ponds just for fun. Now all these years later I still love to fish and go fishing as much as I possibly can. I fish completely different now as far as tackle, electronics and species, etc. But the love for fishing is the same. So my question is this, how many of us fish because our dads did? I think I would have discovered it on my own but luckily I didn't have to, so how many of us owe it to dad and how many just picked it up on their own? And BTW thanks dad!

Always had a fascination about fishing from a young age 5-6 yrs old. My father only took me once as my parents had divorced. Got into fly fishing +- 50 years ago and dumped conventional 30 years ago. Self taught all the way.

I've been very fortunate in having a dad that's always been there and loved to fish and be part of my life! To this day we go fishing for 3 days to a week once a year in Oklahoma are Arkansas trout fishing and threw out the year here!

Owe it all to my Grandpa. Every single weekend from the age of 4-11 we went to Richland Chambers and fished for Crappie and Sandbass. And I mean EVERY weekend! Went there recently and flew right by our #1 tie up spot for crappie. Definitely brought back some memories.

Both of my parents fished. My dad preferred the coast and my mom preferred to fish.
Many wonderful memories fishing across the southern edge of the nation with them when I was a kid.

My grandfather is the one that originally took me out trout fishing when I was just a little guy and those are the memories I cherish as an adult.

I bass fished a lot during my senior year of high school with my bio-dad and only managed to catch about 3 or 4 so, it wasn't that special to me as I had other things on my mind at that age. In my adult years I have taken the person I call my dad out fishing a few times when we can sneak away and it's great. This is something I want to pass on as a memory and skill to my kids so they can do the same with their children. My two older daughters have done really well and enjoy it as they understand patience and quality time with their dad, my son on the other hand...is only there because and I quote "because you love it dad". Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the fact that he is willing to go out in the heat, kick rocks, and make toys out of anything at his disposal but, he doesn't have the patience to catch a fish yet.

Thursday we set out to a local pond where I was sure that he could get his first bass. I got his rod set up with a texas rigged worm, coached him on the slow/pause retrieval as he has the cast down pretty well for being 5 years old. But still no takers so, he started having me cast for him and eventually reel it in as well. After getting frustrated I finally pulled out my rod and got a fish on line and let him finish the job, but this isn't technically his first fish. I will continue to try to get him excited about going fishing, even if I have to bribe him with candy.

Maybe in a couple of years we can go out and become great fishing buddies and make fond memories.
