I am going surf fishing down on matagorda around late August to early September. I want to catch redfish, Sharks, black drum, and a few jacks if possible. I have a penn senator 4/0 spooled with 440 yds. Of 40 lb mono. I am not after huge sharks but would like to catch some around 4 ft. Or so. I also have some pre made shark leaders and some 6oz. Spider and pyramid sinkers. I do not have a kayak so I am thinking that I could float my bait out by tiring a balloon to the line. If this does not work I might look into just renting a kayak to get my bait out. Also what kind of bait should I use and how far should I take the bait out? Thanks

Either mullet or cut whiting.... And to the second gut during the day or the first gut at night... Also around a cut in the first sandbar is usually purdy good especially on an outgoin tide...

I've tried to use a ballon before but it comes back in with the waves. It could work with a north wind and outgoing tide I imagine. I'd just try to to get it out past the breakers and see what it'll do. Your 4/0 will work for smaller sharks. I've caught a 6 footer on mine before using 40 lb main line with a top shot of 80lb. As far as bait goes, cow nose rays, horse mullet, whiting, southern stingrays or skipjack all works well. Make sure you get enough of whatever so you can change bait often to keep it fresh. Depending on current your 6 oz weights may not be enough. You may have to double up your weights to get a good stick. Hope this helps.

Ok thanks for the advice guys. Just wondering but where on matagorda should I try and fish? Toward the jetties?
