Got into refurbing Penn reels for big Catfish and I'm really enjoying it. Cheaper to upgrade than a abu garcia. I'm seeking out alternatives to Abu since they're no longer making them in Sweden. Penn Jigmaster 500s with upgraded handle and 5:1 gear ratio. Can cast a 1lb weight across the Brazos lol.

Neat, and great job...looks killer. I've got to get over "nervousness" regarding my reels, and just open one up to clean and "learn!".

Abu is still making reels in Sweden, the C3 & C4 for sure and several others. You just have to do a little research and read the descriptions carefully.

I'm pretty sure next year production will begin to change over to China. I've been an Abu guy all my life and will continue to buy older model reels. The reels I have built over the Years are old but still smoother than the 2014 models

Now the 10000 is made in Taiwan I believe. The 7000ic3 is a China version that I beefed up and they're actually a pretty decent reel. Then there's the 6500 and 6600 mag. Have two of the 6600 and they're going thru a makeover right now.

another interesting thing to do is to add magnets and aluminum spools. I have done this with the 155 and 350. That is if you get some kind of happiness out of using antique reels as I do.

Alan Tanni has excellent tutorials especially for Penn reel rebuilds at his site.
