I'm new to stripers and hybrids. Only fished them once with a guide and am hooked. We fished with artificial and I am wanting to try live shad.

How do you rig them up? Weight, no weight? Hook above weight or below? Through the nose or tail? Do you run double hooks like a crappie rig or just a single?

Thanks,

I am no expert, but I fish live shad a few times and caught fish, by hooking them from nose using a mosquito wire hook, using a casting rod with the spool open so the shad can run free, you do not have to cast far if the shad is lively it will make a run for it, although I haven't I think using a fluorocarbon leader can only help in this setup,
good luck
Carlos

Since you will get a ton of replies, I will go first, live bait is my money maker.

I use a 2 ounce egg sinker with a bead stop and a quality swivel (Carolina rig). I like a three foot FLC leader with a no. 4 Gamakatsu Octopus circle hook. I always hook them sideways thru the nose. The key is a lively Shad

Everyone rigs their line different. Mostly hook, 18"-2' of line, the wight. I use 2/0 circle hooks and 1 oz weight. Most everyone I know hook shad thru the nose, that is the way my son-in-law does it and he guides on Texoma part time. They stay alive longer and are more active. He does not use circle hooks and uses a bigger weight sometimes. If you are using braid, put a leader of 17 or 20# flouro on the rig.

A bead above the swivel keeps it out of the rod tip. I have used a button off my shirt, it works ok also. It keeps inexperienced anglers from winding the swivel into the tip.

My use of the circle hooks...Helps mortality on Hybrids. Last year, I recorded only three youngsters that couldn't make it. I use the bead below the weight to protect the knot at the swivel.

It would go from top to bottom......weight, bead, swivel, leader, hook. If you are coming out here, give me a heads up. I will point you in the right direction.
