for those of you that have the patience to dead stick I know you should let the fish tell you how long, but how long do you guys let your bait sit there before you move it or re-cast and also, what is your best dead sticking bait.

Thanks
May your next bass be your personal Best.

BPS Stik-O rigged wacky style. Favorite colors are Sure Thing and Double Trouble. Let it sit maybe 30 seconds then pop up a couple of times and repeat a few times. And I hope your right about my next one being a new PB! thumb

If I'm alone, I can stand deadsticking for maybe a minute.....but only once. After that, my patience gets shorter and shorter. I probably average about 20-25 seconds. If I have someone to talk to, probably about a minute and a half.

I wasn't getting anything today and then I tossed out a BPS Stik-worm in green pumpkin red flake. I tossed it out and actually started packing things up with my other hand to head out. About 30-45 seconds went by and I felt a big ol' knock, set the hook and pulled in a solid fish thumb

Usually if I'm purposely dead sticking I like using a wacky jig with a Berkley Havoc Money Maker. It sits on the weighted end keeping the hook/bait suspended enough for current to move the bait a little bit.

Spring--nail weight in the nose, hook in the middle 5-7 inch finesse worm
Fall--regular sized fluke weightless Trig

Last fall, there were a few days when the best pattern was to cast out a weightless fluke in 8-10 fow and just let it fall and sit for 2 minutes. Just when you'd just about give up on it, a bass would pick it up.

In the winter, I'll sit there and hold a deadsticked bait still for minutes at a time, I'll just let the wind and current do the moving. every now and then I'll drop the rod tip down and pick it right back up, then sit and wait and wait and wait. . .then repeat.

Me too, Twin. Rod in one hand, other hand in my pocket, trying to keep it warm. Then I switch. Usually get bit too.

I caught two small LMBs at Marine Creek a couple of late afternoons ago on a pale purple ringed worm from local source, KC Injection Baits, and in both cases, I made long casts and just let it drop and settle in, dead sticked it for about a minute, then repositioned the worm to see if I could get some attention by slow and long rod tipping over my head, reeling up the slack line, a few tiny twitches, then dead sticking it again. I did this about 5 times for each cast before I brought it back in for a fresh cast.

Two fish from the bank at Marine Creek in an hour, while my wife walked, seems like a fishing frenzy to me.

I'll try really slowing down again out there next time to see if I have found a decent pattern.

I try to overcome my impatience by imagining a bass sitting there contemplating my bait sitting still, curious but not sold. Move it too quickly and the bass might ignore it or swim off. Let the tension build for as many seconds as I can, then shake or hop it forward. It works, but there is always a strong urge to cover water quickly. Some baits don't lend themselves to being presented that way, though.

Dead sticking isn't precisely defined, just look at the pros on YouTube showing multiple techniques and ideas. The term may have originated with a single technique in mind.

I think it is broadly interpreted as casting and letting your bait drift to the bottom, then a "do nothing" approach on a fairly tight line . . . no movement or fisherman involvement, just current working on the bait/lure. Or, just dropping a bait vertically, too, in some cases.

But, sitting there forever with a plastic bait if there are no fish nearby means you are then relegated to hoping something swims by and notices it. This is where any number of people then move the bait, start over again by reeling up a bit for another long pause especially if the fish bite is slow.

At least one pro angler described dead sticking as a great way to cover a lot of water.
