Bream as in sunfish as in bluegill as in perch? It doesn't take much. You can use a broomstick and catch them.
Don't get me wrong, I love catching these little hard fighting sons of guns but it doesn't take an extensive catalog of fishing equipment to do it. A simple cane pole and worms and I can have fun for quite literally hours catching one after another in the right spot at the right time.
Honestly, who among us doesn't have a blast catching a 5" fish over and over each cast? I know I do!

I use a Shakespeare Agility 7 foot graphite rod with a Daiwa Goldcast reel by choice. If the headroom is limited, as on a covered pier, I use a Zebco Authentic 4 1/2 foot glass rod with a Micro 11 reel.
I completely disagree that the rod does not matter. The better rods enable one to control the presentation of the bait and to enjoy playing the little fighters. For just meat fishing I suppose a broomstick or cane pole would do but you lose some of the enjoyment of the sport.

One of the nice things about fishing for sunnies is, it is not that expensive. I have picked up the five foot ugly stick combos over the years on sale for about $26.00. I have a few that I have had for years and they are still going strong. I love the full fight you feel using a good ultra light combo. Can't beat it! Side Note: Big Channels,Bass,Carp, and Blue Cats are an added bonus.

$19.00 5'6" ultralight berkley Cherrywood spinning rod, 2-6# line. Love those Cherrywoods, I have several different sizes. Academy runs sales sometimes and you can get them for half that price.
Just one more cast!
