I located some good sized sunfish today and caught a dozen of them on a spinning outfit. Next time I go, I plan to take my four weight fly rod. I have some dry flies that I will need to get down in the water column a few feet, and am wondering how to weight them. Should I use a tiny bb sho on the line? Or how can I make them sink? I use a floating line.

That works. It's recommended to use enough tippet to down to where the fish are and put the shot just a bit ahead of the fly so it'll have some action.

I add a #3 split shot to help get the fly down. I put the shot about 8 to 12 inches up from the fly.

Rather than sinking a dry fly I usually use Briminators. The light bead chain eyes help it to sink slow and ride hook up. If I need to fish deeper I will use a weighted briminator or add a #3 split to get it down faster.

I also use a fluorocarbon leader when fishing subsurface.

Thanks for the replies. I will google a briminator to see what it is. That's something new to me.

Below is a link to a briminator pattern. Also, a link to a Briminator thread with pictures.

Might need to pick up a few of them.

You can also rub some dirt on the fly and along your leader. In a pinch this will help it sink a bit.

Why use a splitshot -- a beadhead haresear or pheasanttail trailed 2-3 ft with the dry fly.. You may get double hookups so use stronger tippet on the bhead.. This is deadly here in Colo. for trout.

Put wet fly can't say oil (that floats lol) solution on it it will go right down. Will give you a good slow sink vs. adding shot to it. I am all for that dropper as well.

You could also just slip a bead on the line before you tie your fly on.
I always have problems casting split shot. The extra hinge a foot up my line tangles the s....tuffing out of my tippet.
It also means I can change the sink rate by changing the size of the bead.

Good suggestions here. Especially like the one to add a bead. Will try that. Thanks for the replies.
