Spent the weekend at neals lodge, below Garner state park, on the frio. The river is in the best shape I've ever seen. The fish were spooky and would bolt if you walked up too fast. So we did a lot of "sneak" fishing, my youngest called it. All fish were fat and very healthy. Started with some nice long ear and finished with Rio. Seems the presentation they liked the most was the "get in there with them" technic. They won't spook nearly as bad from swimmers because they see them everyday, maybe?? That's my story for getting out fished anyway.

All fish were caught under a float in the current breaks with night crawlers, around a dozen crawlers an hour at one point...little fish ate us up. Every rock and snag that broke the current was holding fish, getting them to bite wasn't always easy. Caught 50 to 100 fish a day most being small

Only bluegill?? of the weekend. Daughters first Rio. She's one up on the boys now... Want to thank you guys on the forum for posting how and where you're catching them. Gills are sometimes over looked and are a blast to catch when you're dialed in, it's literally non stop action which is awesome for the kids. Thanks again guys

Great pictures and report. What an outstanding way to spend the day with the kids. Well done By the way, those are redbreast sunfish and not long ear sunfish. Long Ear actually have a shorter, broader ear with white on the edges.

Thanks for the ID. I'm still learning all the gills.

Thanks for the ID. I'm still learning all the gills. LOL, most of us still are. I have a Perch Species thread that's about 10 pages long and I still get confused.

Having great times with family is what it is all about. Looks like some super fish. Nicely done.
Side Note: I have fish that river several times all on the fly. It's a great place to fish and relax.
