Well it was bound to happen. We’ve been able to dodge the storms since March, but mother nature finally won out this morning, and I had to cancel the trip. I got another scheduled for this afternoon, but while I have some free time, here’s what worked for us this week.

The docks and brush piles have been the key to our success. Docks with a good amount of water are producing nice take homes of crappie, with a Shaddaboy Thump Chubby being the bait of choice.

The brush piles have been productive, although I can’t believe how deep the fish are right now. My best pile this week was in water deeper than 20ft, with the fish only being a foot off the bottom. I have been using a CR Special Thump Chubby for this kind of situation.

In both scenarios, movement is key. Obviously, the jig is always moving while dock shooting. I’m using a 1/16 ounce unpainted jig head, and moving quickly from dock to dock. For brush, I’m using an 1/8 ounce jig head and moving the jig up and down or pitching it quite a bit. Either way, they don’t want it sitting still.

A few pictures from the last few days:

Your doing just fine as always.

Funny you said something about deep fish. I saw what I thought were crappie setting near the bottom in 26 FOW, dropped down and got bit as soon I lifted it off the bottom.

Funny ain't it.

Nice report, Lane. I spent a few hours on the water Friday afternoon and caught 18. By the time I got home, I was holding up dinner plans, and never quite got around to doing a report.

Yes, Cedar Creek is only a few inches high, but there's been lots of water moving through and the lake does have more color than usual.

You have done it again, and again! Thanks for sharing the successes!

One question - do you think a red hook makes any difference for this type of crappie fishing? helpsign

DFW-fisherman: I don't think red hooks make much of a difference. I actually stopped carrying red hooks a couple of years ago when I found out the tempering process actually weakens the bend of the hook. Now I only fish with, and sale, bronze or black nickel hooks.
