What does everyone think about the Big Tuna? I think this will be a good all around yak for me and my family. I would like to hear from those that have used this tandem and solo.

I purchased a 2015 Big Tuna to take my 10 year old son fishing. We primarily fish inshore, flats, marshes, and small lakes. I thought he would be fine with both of us fishing together in the same boat. After a couple of trips he expressed interest in his own kayak to fish from. I purchased him a used Tarpon 100 and he has loved this boat, being able to fish and paddle on his own. I thought I might keep the Big Tuna as a secondary boat or buddy boat in addition to my Tarpon 120. After stored in the garage and never getting used I sold it.

Pros: Great stability, Great fishing platform and storage, No problems standing. Tracks better than expected for a wide 35"kayak. Great seats, Plenty of room for 2 people to fish. 500# weight capacity. You will feel very safe in this kayak will handle chop. Great solo kayak for a large person, I am 5'10 195 so was allot of kayak for me.


Cons: Heavy to transport 90# without seats, better have a trailer. Lots of freeboard, will catch allot of wind. It is a workout to paddle in wind, chop and tides. If you plan on covering lots of open water it can be a brute. Rod Holders are difficult to get too.

For me, wide heavy kayaks are not for me. I will sacrifice stability and ability to stand for a better more efficient paddle and fishing experience. I purchased for the purpose of taking my son fishing. At the advice of others to purchase his own yak and avoid a tandem, which I ignored, I hope you will take this into consideration before you make your decision.
I sold the Big Tuna and purchased wife a Hobie Revo 13, so now she can go out and accompany us as well.

I have read the posts about tandems and kids wanting their own yak after awhile, and I have gone back and forth with the decision. My wife said something the other day about wanting to go out with us as well every once in a while. Knowing her, it might be once and done, she is not a big fan of the water, and then my son will want his own as well. I was leaning towards the Native Slayer 14.5 and putting a seat in the back for my son.

I think I need to have a serious conversation with my wife on if she really wants to go out with us. If I do get a used Big Tuna, I figure I wont be out much if I sell it again in a year or two.

I have one and fish out of it solo frequently. Not going to win any speed races, but I don't find it cumbersome. Extremely stable solo, slight wobble when fully loaded with two adults and a two year old.

It's heavy, but I still manage to get it on top of the truck.

Personally my wife and I use this kayak for tournaments, 1 each. Lots of room and easy to paddle for size.

This kayak is extremely versatile.

It is stable though. If u wanna stand to fish it could b right 4u.
Trade offs man.
Their cuda is a lot better yak for most IMO.
