Would like anyone who fishes The Colorado River system of lakes for some info and history on LBJ. I have just joined a family who has a house on LBJ, and will spend some time there this summer. I believe this is a constant level lake. It appears there are more idiots on jet-skis and and driving power boats than there are fisherman. However, after 2 exploratory trips the lake seems to have potential. I am a bass fisherman first, but like catching white perch and catfish too, or even bream when they are bedding.
I did not see a lot of timber on this lake, but a good number of docks. With that said there did not appear to be a lot of docks that had lights over the water for fishing at night. Do folks not fish at night here?
The lake seems to have some good amount of grass, coontail, some duckweed and moss. Depth finder shows a lot of soft bottoms in most of the coves, and channels. I would think off shore ledges and/or drop offs would be good with deep water baits. The shallow water seemed to be pretty clear with some blow downs and water weeds for frogging or spinner baits.
Does the fact that the water does not fluctuate much have an adverse affect of finding current ? I was there this past weekend with the heavy rains, and thought I might find some rip rap with current over it , but did not. does this lake have a good sustainable level of bass ? Is there more pressure on the fish than I saw? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks JB

I don't think the lake gets a considerable amount of fishing pressure, and it fishes really well.

I have never fished there at night, but don't let a lack of lights on docks dissuade you. While I have caught significant numbers of fish on lighted docks on other lakes on the Colorado, it's not necessary for success.

Key on docks and offshore humps and ledges, especially ones with grass.

They don't have lights on the docks....they are underwater and plenty of docks have them. It's a great lake! If you want current, check out Marble Falls lake.

Yup constant level, grass and plenty of recreational boats. Welcome to the hill country lakes. They all are full of recreational people that think you are the idiot for fishing, not them. Get used to that or go at night.

The lake is an excellent fishing lake for bass, catfish, crappie and white bass. This lake was stocked over a period of a few years. Back in 2000, we put in 300,000 Florida strain bass and another 300,000 the following year. Few years later more were added and total probably amounted to about a million fingerlings added to the lake since 2000. As far as the river rats they are plentiful. Just have to abstain from throwing a DD22 at them at times to try and turn them around. There is milfoil and hydrilla in the lake and lots of points with vegetation on them, especially lower end. Since the lake is pretty much constant level, except in times of extreme rain, not much problem running. Just be sure to know where the high spots as they can ruin your prop in a heartbeat. Lots of tournaments are held on this lake especially from Jan thru may. After that it is mostly local club tournaments.

BUSY LAKE... lots of jet fleas, but a GREAT lake too...

LBJ is pretty solid but as others have said... Fish very early or late in the day. Jet fleas and ski boats are abundant.

We have a friend with a lake house out there and their whole cove has underwater dock lights. It's madness!!!!

many thanks for the info. I did not get out at night last weekend due to heavy rains. but will plan on a night run next trip. Is there rip rap located near the Dam as with most lakes? I have probably a 30 minute run from the house down stream. I have always capitalized on heavy rains from my home area by concentrating on current, especially if/when the water starts to fall out. This may be a non issue on a constant level lake. But a big black single blade Colorado blade spinner bait should work around those lights at night. Thanks again JB

There is rip rap on the dam, and last time I was there a lot of healthy grass was growing out in front of it
